Boingo Wireless

Santa Monica, California
Founded in 2001
www.boingo.com

Why It’s Fierce: Boingo is positioning itself to resell wireless Internet access across the country with little overhead, and thus to make huge profits where others have so far failed. The company has a particularly innovative and cost-effective approach to building a nation-wide network of hot spots: rather than spending billions building infrastructure, it is patching together hot spots that already exist. Boingo also is making it easy for for coffee-shop owners and other venue operators to deploy their own hot spots -- and in the process join the Boingo Network. As the brainchild of technology innovator and Earthlink founder Sky Dayton, Boingo may be the first to prove how hot spots can be profitable.

What to look for in 2003: Look for Boingo to redouble its effort to increase the size of its network as it faces increasing competition from Cometa Networks and others. We also expect Boingo to offer more flexible pricing plans.
