Flarion Technologies
Bedminster, NJ Why It’s Fierce: Flarion has developed one of the most compelling alternative wide-area 3G wireless data technologies available on the market. The company’s IP-friendly flash-OFDM technology allows mobile operators to seamlessly connect corporate LANs with wireless Wide Area Networks with the speed and latency to meet stringent corporate network requirements. The technology uses a digital modulation that splits the wireless signal into several different strands at different frequencies. What does this mean? Try 1.5 Mbps of data with a more efficient use of bandwidth than any of its 3G cellular rivals (i.e. more data, faster data, and at a lower cost than UMTS, EDGE, or CDMA2000). Flarion has trials with both Nextel Communications and SK Telecom. It also has a $58 million VC arsenal from Pequot Capital and Cisco Systems. We think it's a winner. What to look for in 2003: We suspect Flarion will sign another partnership with a carrier in the U.S. and possibly with another carrier in Asia, probably in China. Also look for Flarion to win a major government contract, climbing on board the homeland security bandwagon. |
