Why It’s Fierce: As wireless users and carriers come to love MMS and picture-swapping, they’ll probably have PictureIQ to thank. This company lives up to its name. PictureIQ’s server technology allows for enhanced static pictures and multimedia animation across different wireless networks. The company was spun out of Adobe Systems and in August secured $6 million in funding from Adobe Ventures, Digital Partners, and Granite Ventures. PictureIQ has partnered with Nokia to help the handset giant improve the imaging portion of its MMS system. Here’s what impresses us the most about PictureIQ: its technology is behind J-Phone’s Sha-Mail service, the most successful picture messaging service to date.

What to look for in 2003: With the proliferation of MMS-like services in Asia, Europe, and the U.S., we expect PictureIQ’s technology to be in greater demand with carriers around the globe in the year to come. Look for it to sign license deals left and right.
