San Mateo, CA Why It’s Fierce: Sonim is one of the few startups offering IP-based instant communication services in the GSM/GPRS and CDMA world. Sonim's Instant Communications Solution allows carriers to deploy unique voice messaging services, such as Push-to-Talk (think: Nextel's Direct Connect), over their non-proprietary wireless data networks. It can be sold directly to carriers or installed on consumer devices such as handsets, PDAs, and desktop PCs. Sonim has forged partnerships with Texas Instruments, Symbian, and Infineon, and raised $21.6 million in first-round funding last fall. What to look for in 2003: Look for one or two U.S. carriers other than Nextel to begin experimenting with text- and voice-based instant communication services, with Sonim’s technology powering these trials. |
