Airvana
Chelmsford, MA Why It's Fierce: After almost three years of market pessimism, 3G
is back with carriers rolling out service around the globe. With the
pressure to launch 3G, though, comes the need for better networks and
better network management. Airvana’s innovative technology allows CDMA
carriers to launch 3G 1xEV-DO networks that use all-IP infrastructure.
This means simply that Airvana’s 3G networks can accommodate more data,
which means carriers can offer more data services. Airvana’s IP structure
also makes it easier for carriers to manage their networks, and could even
allow them to launch new services, such as Voice-over-IP through their
cellular networks. The company has raised over $80 million to date and
claims Qualcomm was one of its chief investors and technology partners.
Airvana’s network equipment partners are Nortel Networks and Ericsson. The
company’s technology has been deployed by carriers around the world. Last
year the company helped Verizon Wireless’ launch its EV-DO service in San
Diego. Thanks to the strength of its technology and partnerships, Airvana
is perfectly positioned to take advantage of this year’s 3G rebound. What to look for in 2004: Look for Airvana to spearhead more EV-DO deployments around the world, especially in the Latin American wireless market, where many carriers are eyeing 3G as a DSL alternative. Also, keep an eye on Verizon Wireless as it launches EV-DO in more U.S. markets. Airvana is likely to be involved with some of these deployments. |
