Why It’s Fierce: This year the IEEE 802.16 Task Force is expected
to roll out the latest version of the technology, 802.16d, while major
carriers such as BT, AT&T, and Nextel are running WiMAX trials. Aperto
Networks is at the forefront of WiMAX development. Aperto is working
closely with its key partner, Intel, to help develop 802.16d chips and
will release WiMAX equipment using the new standard. The company has
signed fixed-wireless broadband deals with 100 carriers in 40 countries
around the world and is pushing WiMAX as a wireless broadband solution.
Aperto is a leader of the Service Provider Working Group of WiMAX and is a
founding member of both IEEE 802.16 Task Force and the WiMAX Forum. Intel
plans to integrate WiMAX into its wireless chips next year, meaning that
this technology will quickly move into general use. The company has raised
$77 million to date, meaning it has the cash to go the distance. Aperto
will be a key supplier of WiMAX chips and network gear as this technology
moves into the mainstream.
What to look for in 2004: Look for Aperto to help WiMAX this year
as the company leads the development of 802.16d chips and hardware. Also,
look for Aperto to sign more WiMAX agreements with carriers in the U.S.
and in developing wireless markets. |
