Jabber
Denver Why It’s Fierce: The problem with most existing mobile instant
messaging (IM) solutions is that they do not offer cross-platform or
cross-carrier interoperability. IM firm Jabber entered the wireless market
last year, looking to solve the mobile IM interoperability problem. The
company’s SMS Gateway allows carriers to launch inter-platform and
inter-carrier IM services on mobile phones with WAP and SMS, using
Jabber’s XCP server to convert the SMS instant messages into other
formats. Jabber has several enterprise IM partnerships, including a global
agreement with Hewlett-Packard and membership in Intel’s Centrino WiFi
ecosystem. The company provides IM and presence solutions for top landline
telecoms and enterprises including France Telecom, BellSouth, webMethods,
AT&T, Landmark Graphics, Juniper Networks, and Earthlink. Jabber claims
over 3 million users and the company’s lead investors are Intel Capital
and France Telecom. Jabber’s technology is a hit with the consumer and the
enterprise IT markets and we predict it will make a successful transition
to wireless. What to look for in 2004: Jabber will release mobile IM clients for Microsoft Smartphone and Pocket PC devices as well as a new wireless IM gateway based on the Wireless Village standard. You can also look for Jabber to sign deals with enterprises looking to extend their corporate IM systems to their mobile workers. |
