Why It's Fierce: What is one of the top concerns on the minds of telecom executives today? Effectively distributing multimedia content throughout the home. In-home distribution has been a weak link in the IPTV and triple-play delivery chain with all the extra wires and expensive and inconvenient truck rolls. Enter Ruckus Wireless. The company has caused a commotion by developing the first complete solution for video-grade, high-performance wireless networking. Using proprietary MIMO (multiple-input/multiple-output) antenna technology to provide 802.11g networks with quality of service and multiple antennas to stream video and other multimedia applications at between 20 Mbps and 30 Mbps, Ruckus is debunking the notion that WiFi isn't good enough to deliver high-quality video services. But it's clearly early for the company, which has publicly indicated that the number of units it has shipped since product launch in September is in the thousands. Ruckus has only three publicly announced customers so far: PCCW in Hong Kong, Oklahoma-based Pioneer Telephone and Magnet Networks in Ireland.
What to look for: Look for a number of major players that want to offer triple-play services to test and validate the technology.
