CTIA: US Wireless subscribers pass 250M mark
WASHINGTON, DC – CTIA –The Wireless Association® announced today that the total estimated wireless subscribership in America officially passed the 250 million mark, reaching an all-time national high. Growth in subscribership has more than quadrupled over the past ten years from just over 55 million at year-end 1997 to more than 250 million todayâ€â€an increase of 352%.
Today's announcement follows recent reports from Merrill Lynch and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that further illustrate a thriving wireless marketplace in the U.S. that is working hard to meet the needs of consumers. According to Merrill Lynch's Global Wireless Matrix 2Q07, Americans use more minutes for less cost than any other consumers in the developed world. The FCC reports 98% of Americans can choose from at least four service providers. The FCC also says mobile high speed subscribership increased by about 600% in 2006, to nearly 22 million, and that mobile wireless subscribers made up 60% of all new high speed lines.
"The statistics speak for themselves," continued Largent. "The bottom line is that wireless companies are listening to their customers and in doing so are providing Americans of all walks of life with the mobile products and services that they want and need. Competition, innovation, and consumer value are driving the dynamic U.S. wireless marketplace, giving people access to amazing technology with plans almost anyone can afford and more choices than anywhere else in the world. CTIA–The Wireless Association Urges Senators Not to Act on Out-of-Date Stats
WASHINGTON, DC – CTIA-The Wireless Association® President & CEO Steve Largent issued the following statement today in response to an announcement by Senators Klobuchar (D-MN) and Rockefeller (D-WV) that they will introduce legislation to regulate the competitive wireless industry:
“It is disappointing and unfortunate that Senators Klobuchar and Rockefeller intend to introduce legislation based on incomplete and misleading data. The truth is that complaints about wireless service to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are infrequent and declining.
“The most recently published FCC data, which was absent from the Senators’ announcement, clearly shows that contract -related complaints, as well as overall wireless complaints, are falling.
“Between 2003 and 2006, the number of contract-related complaints dropped from 15 for every one million subscribers, to just nine for every one million subscribers. In that same period of time, the number of total complaints decreased by 19%. All of that occurred while 75 million new subscribers were choosing wireless service, an increase of nearly 50%. This is hardly evidence of an industry in need of regulation and in fact, suggests just the opposite. More Americans are choosing wireless communication than ever before and are increasingly more satisfied with their service.
“Additionally, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) data that was cited in the Senators’ announcement was presented out of context. In their survey, "Cellular Telephone Service and Supplies" is the single complaint category the BBB provides for the wireless industry. As such, all wireless related complaints (hardware, contracts, customer service, etc.) are lumped into one category. Other industries, such as automotive, are separated into multiple categories. If the more than 50 different auto-related categories were grouped into one category, the number of automobile complaints would be more than twice that of wireless and the complaint settlement rate would be far less than the wireless industry’s 92%.
“Wireless consumers in America enjoy the most affordable service in the free world, enabling Americans of all walks of life to enjoy and take advantage of innovative, competitive mobile services. The Klobuchar-Rockefeller bill is unnecessary and, if enacted, threatens to increase the cost of wireless service and reduce the number of choices available to American consumers.â€Â

Press Release: CTIA-The Wireless Association Blasts Google Scheme to Rig 700 MHz Auction
CTIA-The Wireless Association Blasts Google Scheme to Rig 700 MHz Auction
WASHINGTON, D.C., July 20 -– CTIA-The Wireless Association President and CEO Steve Largent issued the following statement today in response to a letter from Google to the Federal Communications Commission asking for special conditions in the upcoming 700 MHz spectrum auction, and pledging to bid at least $4.6 billion for that spectrum if Google's conditions are met:
“The veil has been lifted. Google's letter to the FCC this morning highlights the Internet giant's scheme to have the 700 MHz auction rigged with special conditions in its favor. If Google is willing to commit almost $5 billion dollars for spectrum that it wants encumbered with various requirements, then let it win that spectrum in a competitive auction and choose that business model. Google and its allies, with their collective market capitalization approaching half a trillion dollars, don't need a government handout at taxpayers' expense. The competitive wireless industry welcomes all new entrants, but no company should be able to buy a custom-fit government regulation that suits their particular business plan. Consumers should decide if they're right, not the federal governmentâ€Â.
Press Release: CTIA Renews Call For Veto of ITC Chip Ban As New Study Predicts Billions of Dollars in Economic Damage
CTIA-The Wireless Association Renews Call For Presidential Veto of ITC Chip Ban As New Study Predicts Billions of Dollars in Economic Damage
WASHINGTON, D.C., July 13 – CTIA-The Wireless Association President and CEO Steve Largent issued the following statement today in response to a new report by The Brattle Group indicating that the International Trade Commission (ITC) order banning the importation of new broadband wireless devices will cause up to $21.1 billion in economic harm to U.S. consumers and producers:
"CTIA-The Wireless Association® is deeply concerned that the ITC order banning new models of wireless broadband handsets will cause unprecedented economic harm to tens of millions of American wireless consumers, and because of that we urge President Bush to veto the order.
"The Brattle Group analysis concludes that the ITC order will cause direct economic harm to U.S. consumers and producers estimated to range between $4.3 and $21.1 billion, and will cause billions more in lost productivity across the U.S. economy.
"If the ITC order is allowed to stand, consumers will be denied access to innovative broadband products that promise to improve services and lower prices. According to the Brattle report, the direct economic harm to consumers alone could be as high as $17.7 billion.
"Beyond the telecommunications sector, the ITC decision will cause substantial harm to the entire U.S. economy. The Brattle Group concludes that the effect of the ITC order will spill over to other dynamic sectors, reducing U.S. productivity and resulting in several billion dollars in additional GNP losses.
"The ITC order is particularly troubling because it allows a private patent dispute to inflict unprecedented public harm upon innocent third parties. Under the statutory scheme devised by Congress, the Administration is the last line of defense for protecting the public from these massive economic damages. We strongly urge the Administration to disapprove the ITC order."
The report, which was prepared by The Brattle Group's Dr. Daniel L. McFadden, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, and Dr. Glenn Woroch, Executive Director of the Center for Research on Telecommunications Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, can be accessed at: www.brattle.com/_documents/News/News373.pdf
