Following up on an announcement made last week and a previous demonstration at Mobile World Congress several weeks ago, Acme Packet showcased its new SIP femtocell ecosystem and demonstrated a solution involving new partners, convergence server vendor Tatara Systems and CDMA femtocell vendor AirWalk Communications and UMTS femtocell vendor Ubquisys.
Seamus Hourihan, vice president of marketing and product management at Acme Packet, said the ecosystem members are planning for the eventuality of a SIP femtocell future for residences and corporate enterprises. "We could support SIP or UMA access through the femtocell, or even Wi-Fi, but the companies involved are all very focused on SIP vs. UMA," Hourihan said.
He added that companies pursuing fixed mobile convergence trials right now who are not well-versed in SIP may be having trouble deciding which way to go, but "it's clear that SIP will be the 4G way as other network elements get swapped out for an LTE core."
