Microsoft's Bach touts convergence, personalization
While touting Microsoft's vision of a converged future connecting PCs, televisions and mobile devices, the software giant's Entertainment and Devices Division president Robbie Bach also focused his CTIA Wireless 2009 keynote appearance on the forthcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, promising a more efficient and personalized user experience. "We think the world is moving toward a three-screen world, connected by cloud-based services," Bach said, outlining a corporate strategy hinging upon consumer choice. "Whatever the form factor, experience and functionality, we want to give people what they want."
With Windows Mobile 6.5 expected to arrive sometime this fall, Microsoft continues to offer new details on the operating system's bells and whistles--on Thursday, Bach unveiled a lockscreen that offers users time and date information, calendar appointments and a top-of-screen unlock icon depicting the number of alerts (e.g. text messages and voicemails), complete with direct access to the experience the consumer wishes to address. In addition, Windows Mobile 6.5 will offer customized themes and screens developed in conjunction with fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi. "People want their phones to be a fashion statement," Bach said. "This is about customization and personalization, and making the phone your own."
