Sprint tackles distracted driving with Android app

Tools

ORLANDO, Fla.-- Sprint (NYSE:S) will launch Drive First, a new application designed to curb distracted driving and promote motorist safety. Developed by Location Labs, Sprint Drive First enables parents to configure their teens' mobile phones via the web--the app can lock the driver's device screen and redirect all incoming calls to voicemail, as well as block text alerts and mail an automated response to the sender indicating that the recipient is presently unavailable. Drive First also can allow access to three key contacts and three apps, for example navigation tools.

Sprint will roll out Drive First across its Android smartphones beginning in the third quarter. The operator will charge $2 per month for each device leveraging the app.

Earlier this year, Location Labs teamed with T-Mobile USA to introduce DriveSmart Plus, a similar solution created to halt texting while driving.
