Appcelerator acquires HTML5 development platform Particle Code

Cross-platform development solutions provider Appcelerator has agreed to acquire mobile gaming and HTML5 development platform Particle Code, a move that expands the open-source Appcelerator Titanium platform beyond native iOS and Android application support into mobile web and gaming projects. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Created by the founders of cross-platform multiplayer game maker Mytopia, the Particle Code integrated development environment automates the porting process, enabling developers to build native and HTML5 applications from a single codebase using programming languages including Java, ActionScript3 and C#. The Particle Code SDK includes plug-ins for all premier smartphone and tablet operating systems.

The Particle Code acquisition follows 10 months after Appcelerator scooped up Aptana, whose patent-pending, Eclipse-based technologies comprise the foundation of Titanium Studio, introduced this summer. The web-based Titanium Studio development environment includes source code editing, code completion, Git integration and debugging capabilities, and integrates with iOS, Android and BlackBerry software development kits. Titanium Studio also incorporates Fastdev technologies, giving programmers the flexibility to make real-time code changes while their app is running in the simulator.

Last month, Appcelerator unveiled its Open Mobile Marketplace, an online storefront enabling mobile developers to acquire free and premium software assets for integration into their mobile applications. Open Mobile Marketplace enables any independent software vendor or cloud provider to sell native and HTML5 mobile modules, app templates, design elements and cloud extensions to the Appcelerator community, which currently touts more than 1.5 million developers.
