Consumers value recommendations when downloading apps

Smartphone customers seeking ways to streamline discovery of mobile apps are demonstrating that recommendations matter.

Triapodi, which offers the Appreciate Personal App Market recommendation engine for Android devices, has evaluated the techniques that lead to app discovery among its users. It found that while traditional personal recommendations are most common, the market also benefits from social recommendations.

In May, the company found that 35 percent of Android apps were discovered from personal recommendations while at work, online or while engaging in other activities. About 30 percent of apps were discovered from mobile and online recommendations involving social media like Facebook and Twitter and recommendations apps such as the Appreciate app Triapodi offers to its customers. About 25 percent of apps are discovered from categorized lists of new or popular apps, and 10 percent are discovered through search.

The findings are based on Triapodi's evaluation of data it has aggregated from the Appreciate Personal App Market as well as analyses of procedures that the Appreciate app's 500,000 Android customers employ to discover, download and use apps.

Triapodi said that the apps driving the most usage last week included Facebook, WhatsApp Messenger, GO SMS Pro, Instagram and Badoo.

Triapodi also looked at apps consumers are removing from their devices. The top 10 apps uninstalled during the month included Angry Birds Space, Instagram, GO Launcher EX, Temple Run, Six-Guns, Facebook for Android, Badoo-Meet New People, Solar Charger, Draw Something Free and Ice Age Village.
