Analyzing the world's handset launches from January
Research firm Strategy Analytics tracks and ranks every handset announced by every manufacturer across the globe. The firm evaluates the specifications of each of those handsets to derive engineering trends in the space, from battery capacity to weight and thickness to screen size.
Every month, the firm issues a report on the new handsets released during that month, and provides average rankings based on the specifications of those handsets. Thanks to a teaming between Strategy Analytics and FierceWireless, we'll bring you some key figures from that report. (See the August report, the September report and the November report.)
During January another 52 new handsets and 1 new USB dongle were announced globally by 26 vendors. Motorola's Motoroi XT720 and Nokia's X6 16GB were the pick of the bunch, with the best combination of specifications. Strategy Analytics' fourth quarter 2009 shelf share analysis of 140 mobile network operators revealed that the BlackBerry Bold 9000 maintained its position as the No 1 handset, appearing in the portfolio of more carriers than any other handset, resisting a strong challenge from Nokia's N97 and 5800.
