3G modem market enjoys boom year

Tools

With many operators aggressively pushing their mobile broadband service packages, 2008 was a good year for 3G modems with market analysts In-Stat reporting that 200 million 3G modems were shipped in the year. The two most significant trends in this market were the move in form factor to USB modems and the growing emphasis on embedded devices.

In-Stat forecasts that embedded modems will overtake external modems by the end of 2011. A result of this will be increasing price pressure on external devices, particularly in Western Europe where Huawei has become a major player. The external modem market will peak at US$2.6 billion in 2010, says In-Stat.
