Common API needed for smartphones, claims Ericsson

In an attempt to bring a level of commonality to the smartphone market, Ericsson is putting itself forward as an independent peace broker by helping to define a common set of application programming interfaces (API) that would let programmes and services run across handsets.

The company, which effectively removed itself from the handset business some years ago--although an R&D team remains focused on handset platforms within Ericsson--said it wanted to bring Internet speed to cell phones, and provide Internet companies with access to open mobile APIs and create mash ups.

The concept, which would be based upon IMS, is said to be at least several years away from launch, but Ericsson believes it can influence the future direction of the smartphone industry due to its in-depth relationships with all of the major mobile operators.
