Ericsson will launch its new unified content delivery network (CDN) at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The new network will be optimised to meet the demand for high-quality video content, according to Ericsson.

Ericsson claims that the CDN will enable the delivery of managed and unmanaged content over both fixed and mobile networks using the company's advanced packet core and radio capabilities.

"Our recent Mobility Report shows that mobile data traffic will grow 12 times by 2018, and this is only the start of the tremendous transformation we will witness," said Per Borgklint, Ericsson's vice president and head of its support solutions unit. "The Ericsson Media Delivery Network solution breaks the boundaries of traditional CDN solutions, offering operators a single, intelligent and agile management platform for superior efficiency, optimization, velocity of service and monetisation opportunities."

The company said that the new CDN will enable operator to enter the value chain with profitable video delivery services and to build upon their existing customer relationships. At the same time it offers content providers and enterprises the ability to deliver video, web content and app downloads.

Ericsson said it will demonstrate at MWC side-by-side comparison of the performance and capabilities of a standard network and one enhanced by it new CDN.

The company also announced a raft of products and services at a media event that included its Key Event Experience, which will allow operators to manage high traffic spikes, such as typically seen with popular stadium events.

Many of the other announcements centred on helping operators to improve their networks and provide an improved user experience.
