Operators relying solely on mobile data for growth

A rising number of mobile operators in mature markets are relying on data services as their only source of revenue growth, warns a new report from Coleago Consulting. Statistics from the consultancy showed revenues from data services at a number of leading operators saw strong year-on-year growth in the first quarter, even though total mobile revenue in their home markets declined. For instance, the report shows that Telekom Austria witnessed a 2.1 percent decline in total mobile service revenue in Austria in the three months ending March 31, but mobile data revenue in its domestic market grew by nearly 14 percent.
