Report: Western European spectrum auctions could generate up to €20B

Tools

Despite spectrum auction revenues in 2012 falling short of the benchmark numbers seen in 2000/2001, global professional services and auditing firm KPMG said in its Spectrum Monitor that Western Europe spectrum auctions might generate revenues of up to €20 billion between 2011 and 2015. Commenting on this estimate, Benoit Reillier, director in KPMG's economics and regulation practice, said  in a statement that many governments will be eyeing up spectrum auctions as a way to gain much needed revenue. "While it will not make a structural difference to the level of the deficit in many countries it will certainly go some way towards European governments' garnering of more cash in the short to medium term."
