The global handset market in the second quarter of 2009
The second-quarter numbers for the global handset market are in, and it's time to start parsing the information. Strategy Analytics released a detailed look at market share, shipment and growth information for the world's Tier 1 cell phone makers.

According to Strategy Analytics, Nokia remained at the top of the heap in the second quarter of 2009 with a market share of 38 percent, down from its year-ago peak of 41 percent. Samsung follows in the No. 2 slot with 19 percent, LG came in third with 11 percent, Motorola in fourth with 5.4 percent and Sony Ericsson with 5.1 percent.

Nokia shipped the lion's share of handsets in the second quarter, with 103.2 million units.

According to Strategy Analytics, only Samsung and LG managed to growth their handset businesses in the quarter, while Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola suffered declines.

Indeed, the overall global cell phone market has been declining dramatically over the past several quarters, but enjoyed a slight uptick in the second quarter of 2009.
