An industry leader, Shentel (NASDAQ: SHEN) has delivered a broad range of telecommunication solutions for more than 100 years. We are currently seeking a qualified applicant to fill the exciting position of Senior Network Engineer II in Edinburg, VA.

The Sr. Network Engineer II will be responsible for leading network planning and engineering of all Shentel telephony, data, access, and optical transport infrastructure, as well as, planning, engineering, technology testing, and implementation support for new network technology deployments. The Sr. Network Engineer will also be responsible for generating detailed engineering documentation to support the installation, configuration, and ongoing support of all new network deployments and upgrades.  

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide expert-level design and engineering for major infrastructure projects.


2. Maintain and update engineering records including network maps, IP allocation records, and wavelength plans.


3. Monitor utilization trends and perform capacity planning for all network infrastructure.


4. Design underlying data and fiber network transport to support data, voice and video applications.


5. Develop configuration files for all devices required for new technology deployments.


6. Participate in vendor selection process for new networks technology hardware, software and services.


7. Develop Bill of Material and detailed project plans for all new infrastructure projects.


8. Configure and test evaluation hardware and software.


9. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of networking technologies and industry trends which may improve operations or offer opportunities for new services, and develop recommendations accordingly.


10. Attend appropriate industry conferences, training, and seminars.


11. Advise management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs, customer relations, and/or inter-departmental relations.


12. Prepare or assist in preparing technical white papers, specifications, training documents, or technical presentations as necessary.


13. Follow, support, and enforce all internal control processes and procedures.


14. Provide technology status reports on key projects and presentations as required.


15. Serve as an escalation point for network issues that can not be resolved within the Operations department.


16. Perform other duties as requested by Director, Engineering and Planning and Manager, Network Engineering.

Qualification Requirements:

1. Education:  Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or equivalent) in a relevant engineering or technology field preferred.  Other candidates with a strong technical background and substantial industry or military experience will be considered.


2. Experience Level:  5+ years of relevant experience in the telecommunications industry, military, or large enterprise environment; 3+ years of design and troubleshooting complex large scale TCP/IP networks with a minimum of two years in an ISP like environment.


3. Strong written and verbal communication skills.


4. Licenses or Certifications:  CCIE, CCNP, CCIP, CCDP certification or equivalent knowledge required.

Knowledge of:

1. In-depth knowledge and strong engineering/operating experience in the following areas of specialization:  Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), VPN’s, Optical Networking, Layer 2 and Layer 3 QOS, VLAN, OSPF, BGP, and HSRP


2. VoIP technologies and protocols; specifically SBC, SIP, and MGCP


3. IP address administration, ARIN processes, and  IPv6 preferred


4. In-depth knowledge of Cisco IOS and/or Juniper JUNOS


5. Access technologies (FTTH, DSL, DOCSIS, MetroEthernet)


6. Transport technologies (Ethernet, DWDM, ATM, Frame Relay, SONET, ROADM)


7. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Visio. Must be able to create complex network diagrams and detailed engineering documentation.
