Position Purpose
This is a position in T-Mobile’s Product Design group, responsible for designing new products and services for handsets, retail kiosks, desktop applications, web, and converged devices from early concept through design specification. The Design Manager will manage an interdisciplinary team of interaction and visual designers, both in-house and contractors/consultancies. Graphic designers, Information Architects, interaction designers, prototypers, flash designers, and product designers are among the types of creatives that make up the team. The Design Manager will work in conjunction with business, technical, and user research groups to form project teams and guide and advise them through creative projects. The Design Manager will also work with product line design and development teams, and present to executive management on project content and status. Finally, the Design Manager will collaborate with corporate partners and talent outside the company, both domestic and international, with associated travel as necessary.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
• Establishing a consistent design language across all communication pieces. Develop brand systems including colors, forms, type systems, layouts, etc. for digital interfaces.
• Lead teams to conceptualize new product and services and represent them through design.
• Use freehand sketching and storyboards to communicate design and the use of products.
• Presenting work to senior leaders across the organization, including objectives, strategy and creative executions.
• Work with Product Design Director to establish and evangelize new products across all aspects of the organization and execute best-fit design solutions.
• Lead teams of designers (interaction, industrial, video, prototypers, engineers) to develop product and service designs.
• Direct the work of outside contractors and vendors when necessary.
• Candidate will need to multi-task, develop innovative solutions and programs, and manage multiple design projects at once, all in a professional, respectful and collaborative manner.
• Work with usability engineers to gather data on the design and iterate.
• Candidates must be able to understand the balance of user experience, business case, and time-to-market, and make trade-offs where appropriate.
Management Authority
• Regularly directs the work of three or more full time employees as well as contracors and agencies.
• Interviewing, selecting and training employees. Sourcing and selecting agencies.
• Adjusting pay rates, work schedules and approving leaves
• Conducting performance reviews
• Planning and controlling budget expenditures
• Determining and securing the resources and materials needed to perform the work of the unit
Qualifications
• Bachelors Degree in Graphic Communication, Art, Design, Multimedia, Fine Arts or related field, or equivalent experience required. MA
• 8+ years as a professional designer in software or web design, mobile design, game design, etc. 4+ years managing high-performing teams.
• Strong conceptual and design skills. Strong sense of style and excellent fit-and-finish skills across mediums. Must have zero tolerance for all things fugly.
• Highly skilled with design tools such as Illustrator, Photoshop, Image Ready, Flash, Dreamweaver. Familiarity with HTML, ActionScript, and other technical design/development skills a plus.
• Excellent writing and communication skills.
• Must be comfortable offering collaborative, constructive criticism, thrive on multidisciplinary teams, work on multiple projects simultaneously, and be able to balance great design with meeting deadlines.
• Solid understanding of the fundamentals of user interface design; should have experience working through the entire design lifecycle and be familiar with user-centered design methods.
• Consumer-centric creative vision. Empathy, passion and support for mainstream audience. Customer service orientation where customer delight is primary focus in all actions.
