Position Description
SOFTWARE DEVELOPER – MOBILE DEVICES
Ontela is a dynamic start-up looking for rock-star developers. You need to have a minimum of five years experience as a software developer on one or more shipping or deployed services or products. Strong design skills are great, but you should also have a burning need to write serious amounts of code. We’re looking for flexible, smart people who can help out on multiple fronts.
Ontela has a laser-like focus on simplicity over features. We love to build technology that our parents and even grandparents can use. You won’t be building metatagging, placeshifting, or other buzzword-compliant contraptions. You’ll be building a digital imaging service that’s so ridiculously simple to use that you’ll barely notice it’s there, and that you can’t live without.
ABOUT ONTELA
Ontela is building software to wirelessly connect camera phones to digital imaging software and services. We’re fast-paced, product-focused, and team-based. Our offices are in Pioneer Square, in the historic Smith Tower, and surrounded by fantastic coffee shops, gelaterias, and restaurants. This is a crucial position with significant responsibility and growth potential.
Responsibilities:
• Design, code, and test software that runs on mobile devices, inclusive of the writing of automated unit tests.
• Contribute to the evolution of the software’s architecture.
• Provide technical leadership on projects.
• Mentor junior developers.
• Supplement non-mobile-device teams in producing software as well, as priorities change.
• Work collaboratively with peers (other developers, testers, technical writers, system administrators, etc.) to complete projects, including contributing to their work.
• Communicate with external parties about the software, in particular, handset manufacturers, suppliers, and customers.
• Troubleshoot and repair defects and issues, esp. in the resolution of support cases.
• Contribute to the improvement of the software development process.
• Grow your technical proficiency, both in terms of depth and breadth.
Desired Skills and Experience:
• 5+ years in professional software development using Java and/or C++ required
• 2+ years of experience in writing applications or operating systems for mobile devices or other embedded systems required
• 2+ years of experience developing software for two (or more) of the following platforms is highly desired: J2ME, BREW, Windows Mobile, RIM/Blackberry, Symbian, Android, Apple iPhone
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated experience designing software, applying commonly used design patterns
• 1+ years experience with modern software engineering concepts such as test-driven development and continuous integration
• 1+ years experience providing technology leadership to a team of software developers is a plus
• 2+ years experience in a highly collaborative, cross-functional, team-based environment is a strong plus
• Knowledge of end-to-end software development lifecycle, including planning, development, testing, release, support, maintenance

Educational Qualifications
• Bachelor Science in Computer Science or related discipline, or equivalent experience, is required
Other Notes
• A small amount of travel (5% of your time) may be required to accomplish the above.
• As Ontela operates a mobile Internet service, you may, at times, need to assist in the support of our production environment.
