Director, Licensing Programs

Summary Description
Responsible for developing and managing multiple intellectual property licensing programs in order to maximize profitability and meet licensor and licensee expectations. Manage relationships with existing licensors and develop relationships with new licensors. In collaboration with the Licensing Business Managers, manage existing licensees and develop new licensee accounts. Formulate, document and communicate recommendations on business and licensing opportunities of strategic importance. This position reports to the Vice President of Licensing and Program Management at Via Licensing.

Essential Job Functions

• Identify and investigate new licensing opportunities and be a key liaison with the external business development and licensing community working in the defined business area(s). Ensure that the company’s interests are optimally represented and develop appropriate positive relationships with licensors or prospective licensors. Ensure that key company managers are continuously apprised of the state of affairs in the defined business area(s).

• Assume full responsibility for running select licensing programs by following up and delivering on all commitments to licensees and licensors as described in executed agreements. Meet or exceed revenue goals for assigned licensing programs. Assume lead role with all company departments on making sure all operational aspects of licensing programs (royalty collection, policing, web site management, accounting, etc.) are running as expected.

• Manage assigned licensor relationships to provide superior customer service through consistent communications. Work with licensors to develop existing and future licensing programs to meet changing market conditions and maximize licensing program revenue.

• Train, educate, and support the Licensing Business Managers on assigned licensing programs and in cooperation with the Licensing Business Managers, develop potential licensees and existing licensees.

• Build and maintain close working relationships with internal colleagues to facilitate formulation and adoption of optimal strategies for both early and late-stage business development activities. Provide a cross-functional, corporate perspective in evaluating possible new business and technology initiatives and opportunities.

• Identify key stakeholders for new opportunities and continuously share thinking and adapt business strategy and business development approach to simultaneously address internal and external customer requirements.

• Interact with key companies, industry associations, and relevant standards organizations, etc., as needed to meet business objectives.

• Conduct strategic technology/market research and develop licensing related recommendations in close collaboration with key internal and external resources.

• Develop and deliver appropriate communications, e.g., reports, memos, meetings, presentations, etc. to ensure that senior and other management is appropriately informed.

• Make recommendations for tactics and strategies for improving licensor relationships and to allow the company to take advantage of opportunities.

• Work to develop and understand licensor and licensee perspectives and convey these ideas internally to help create and maintain excellence in the overall customer relationship.

• Recruit, train and develop support staff if appropriate.


• Domestic and international travel is required (35% on average).


Knowledge, Education, Skills, Abilities, and Experience Required

• Education: BS, MBA, JD, or equivalent.

• Extensive knowledge and prior experience in the Wireless industry is essential. Specifically in the areas of 4G technologies (LTE and/or WiMax)

• Minimum 10 years of experience in business and technology related areas. Experience in technical standards bodies, patent pool licensing, joint-licensing activities or similar settings required. Wireless industry experience highly desirable.

• Project management experience useful.

• Business development and technical marketing experience highly desirable. Strategic planning, opportunity analysis and technology development road mapping and business plan development experience highly desirable.

• Excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills essential.

• Ability to work successfully in a team environment with a diverse group of technical and business staff essential.
