Position Description
There’s a new team at Amazon that is about to make a big splash in the mobile space. We’re building a brand-new, world-class customer experience and a set of high capacity, scalable services to support it. We’re tackling hard problems for two very different groups of customers and our customer experience will span different devices from PCs to mobile phones. We have a crystal clear vision and a very aggressive launch target and we’re looking for the best of the best to help us achieve it!
We’re looking for a Software Development Manager to help us execute on our vision. The person filling this role will join the project at the ground floor as the leader of one of our software development efforts. You will build and manage teams of software developers to perform parallel development of project functionality and you will implement a plan to achieve engineering excellence and rapid, consistent delivery of the project goals. Specifically, you will:
* build rock star teams of software developers that know how to communicate with one another and deliver excellent results through rapid iteration
* establish a solid project framework and excellent development processes
* provide technical leadership and guidance to both your team members and your project peers
* be a technical guardian of world-class customer experience for your deliverables: continually raise the bar on functionality, flow, consistency, usability, and simplicity
* be a champion of engineering and operational excellence: establish metrics for measurement of engineering and operational excellence and a process for regular assessment and improvement

We’re looking for an experienced leader with solid technical chops: someone who is comfortable resolving ambiguity and making the right choices to deliver working software on time. We’re looking for a person who can help his or her teams find the right balance of business necessity and technical and operational excellence. The opportunity to make an impact in this role is limited only by your personal capacity! Other qualifications include:
* BS or better in Computer Science or related discipline
* at least 5 years of real industry experience as a software developer with at least 3 of those leading other software developers
* broad-based technical expertise including fluency in several popular programming languages (it would be good if Java and Perl are among them) and a detailed understanding of how things work
* experience delivering great customer experiences and a solid understanding of what made those customer experiences great
* experience shipping one or more large-scale, highly available internet applications: client-server programming, load balancing, network security, and internet protocols should all be second nature
* a proven track record of technological and business success
