DENVER --(Business Wire)-- Qwest Communications (NYSE: Q) announced today that its network infrastructure is prepared for the Democratic National Convention (DNC). As the Official Telecommunications Provider of the DNC, Qwest is proud to support the digital communications infrastructure of such an important international event. With the expected volume of calls, e-mails, instant messaging, text messages, blogs, videos, etc. coming from the convention, the amount of data being transferred is expected to be unprecedented.

Below is a compilation of interesting statistics to help quantify just how digital this convention will be:

• The aggregate data capacity of Qwest's network is about 50 billion bits per second. That means:
• An entire HD movie could be transmitted in about two seconds;
  
• Over the course of the convention, (a four-day period), more than half a billion (514 million) 4 Mbps MP3s could be transmitted; and
• Using an estimate of 20 Terabytes (1 Terabyte equals 1 trillion bytes) for the Library of Congress' print holdings, the entire collection could be transmitted in less than one hour (58.7 minutes).
• Qwest installed video equipment with capacity to handle 130 simultaneous video feeds at both the Pepsi Center and INVESCO Field at Mile High.
• Infrastructure upgrades required approximately 3,344 miles of single strands of fiber and 140 miles of single strands of copper and coaxial cable.
• Qwest added approximately 2,600 additional data lines and 3,400 voice grade circuits to serve both venues.

The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) announced in January that Qwest would serve as the Official Telecommunications Provider for the DNC's Aug. 25-28 event in Denver. As the Official Telecommunications Provider, Qwest is providing wireline voice and data services, including high-speed Internet, for the DNCC administrative offices, approximately 5,000 delegates and more than 15,000 members of the media expected to visit Denver for the convention, as estimated by the convention committee. Qwest also will supply the cabling for voice and data services for the DNCC and media at the Pepsi Center and INVESCO Field at Mile High, sites of the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
