Motorola announced a $310 million contract win with China Mobile to provide GSM infrastructure and services. The companies said the contract was signed on April 27 in Washington, D.C.

Motorola will supply GSM/GPRS/EDGE infrastructure and related services for added voice and data capacity and interoperability between GSM and TD-SCDMA networks.

"Motorola has worked with China Mobile for more than 20 years," Mohammad Akhtar, vice president and general manager for Home and Networks Mobility in Moto's China business, said in a statement. "As a long-term strategic partner of China Mobile, Motorola is proud to continue being a part of its growth."

China Mobile is in the midst of building out its TD-SCDMA network--a Chinese standard for 3G technology that the carrier recently scored a license for--and interoperability between its 2G GSM and 3G networks stands as a critical component of its network operations. The win is a significant one for Motorola, which recently has lost out to rivals like Alcatel-Lucent in the Chinese market; Alcatel-Lucent recently muscled deals with China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom totaling billions of dollars.
