BridgeWave Broadens Product Line to Offer a Complete 4G Carrier Class Backhaul Solution Set in Multiple Frequency Bands
FlexPort® µWave Expands BridgeWave’s Offerings into the Microwave Market Providing Industry First True Wire-speed GigE Microwave Solution in a Single All-Outdoor Unit
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- 4G Wireless Evolution Conference:
BridgeWave Communications, the leading supplier of 4G backhaul solutions, has expanded its FlexPort® product family into the microwave domain. The company leverages its expertise in the design of high-capacity, full-rate gigabit millimeter wave (60 GHz and 80 GHz) products to develop FlexPort µWave, the first licensed microwave product line capable of true line-rate GigE connectivity in a single all-outdoor unit and without the need for data compression. BridgeWave’s move into the microwave space demonstrates its commitment to providing carrier-class, high-capacity solutions for next-generation mobile backhaul.
The advance of mobile technologies from 2G to 3G and quickly migrating towards 4G means carriers and mobile operators have been tasked with cost-effectively providing high-capacity backhaul to transmit mobile traffic both to and from cell towers. A recent Cisco Global IP Traffic Forecast reported that Internet video currently includes more than one-third of all consumer Internet traffic, and will approach 40 percent of traffic by the end of 2010. Global mobile data traffic is expected to double every year through 2014, and as a result, backhaul connections must scale appropriately, quickly and cost-effectively to handle this demand.
“As carriers struggle to handle massive 3G data traffic and at the same time ensure a smooth migration to 4G, they are looking for ways to solve the mobile backhaul bottleneck,” said Amir Makleff, CEO at BridgeWave Communications. “BridgeWave is committed to providing solutions that meet those needs – whether carriers are looking for microwave or millimeter wave technology. We have taken our expertise in building high-quality gigabit transmission solutions that have been adopted by carriers worldwide and extended it to the lower frequency spectrum where longer distances can be accommodated. As the amount of data traffic continues to skyrocket, we believe that carriers will demand higher capacity links and we are ready to meet that need.”
FlexPort µWave is the first microwave radio capable of transmitting full-rate gigabit Ethernet in a single, compact, all-outdoor unit. Utilizing BridgeWave’s innovative Ethernet switching, digital modem and signal processing technologies, FlexPort µWave is designed to offer true future-proof access and aggregation capacity without ever having to add on a second radio or climb a tower to achieve full-rate gigabit transmissions in the lower frequency spectrum from 11 to 38 GHz.
“The data demand thrust upon the mobile networks is causing carriers to focus on mobile backhaul equipment, and microwave/millimeter wave point-to-point radios in particular,” said Richard Webb, directing analyst at Infonetics Research. “The 6-38 GHz traditional microwave market continues to be an area of growth as overall mobile networks will require higher and higher capacity radio links. Additionally, the hundreds of megabits of capacity required by LTE base stations has prompted the industry to explore solutions that can scale to up to a full gigabit. Until FlexPort µWave, transporting full rate gigabit speeds at the microwave frequencies meant multiple sets of indoor and outdoor hardware. BridgeWave is the first to address carriers’ need for a GigE all-outdoor solution.”
The FlexPort family of products was designed for network operators wanting to either migrate to next-generation 4G networks from their existing 2G/3G networks, or for new service providers building “greenfield” WiMAX or LTE networks. FlexPort µWave offers a cost effective migration path from initial medium capacity (300Mbps) transport, to full-rate gigabit access and backhaul connections without the added expense of a second tower climb. FlexPort µWave offers throughput on par with fiber-based connectivity and provides operators with a flexible, future-proof platform for short- and medium-range applications.
“Operators need a cost effective way to migrate to next-generation networks without breaking the bank,” said Idan Bar-Sade, Sr. Vice President of Engineering and Product Management for BridgeWave Communications. “Our advanced signal processing and radio technologies provide the capability of simultaneously transmitting over multiple RF channels in a single, all outdoor solution. FlexPort µWave yields full-rate gigabit throughput with very low latency for high capacity backhaul connections and can reach distances of up to 10 miles. Operators, carriers, service providers and enterprise users can easily and cost-effectively migrate from initial low capacity transport to full-rate gigabit access and backhaul connections – with the lowest total cost of ownership.”
