Broadcom and EA Join Forces to Deliver High Performance Gaming on Mobile Phones
IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation , a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that it has signed an agreement with Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) to enable popular EA Mobile(TM) game titles on mobile phones powered by Broadcom(R) solutions. The game titles will be optimized for the latest generation VideoCore(R) III mobile multimedia processor from Broadcom that supports high definition (HD) content and a new level of mobile phone graphics performance equivalent to today's dedicated handheld game consoles. This agreement enables EA to deliver games into handsets that contain Broadcom silicon as these handsets come to market.
"With EA offering its exciting titles on VideoCore III processors, Broadcom can deliver a richer, more exhilarating mobile gaming experience," said Mark Casey, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Mobile Multimedia line of business. "The Broadcom BCM2727 processor continues to set the bar for low power, extreme mobile multimedia performance and is receiving significant recognition within the mobile device and gaming communities."
The recently announced Broadcom BCM2727 VideoCore III mobile multimedia processor features on-chip advanced 2D and 3D graphics accelerators and efficient audio technology that provide a rich viewing and listening experience ideally suited for gaming applications on mobile handsets. The ultra-low power graphics pipeline is optimized for efficient hardware acceleration of the OpenGL ES 2.0 3D graphics standard and supports graphics rich 3D games with rendering performance up to 32 million triangles per second. Mobile games residing on the phone can also be played on televisions up to HD resolution via an included HDMI output, enabling a more versatile gaming experience.
"The new Broadcom VideoCore III processor delivers the unique combination of cutting-edge 3D graphics performance, at low power, for extended gaming on a mobile phone," said Travis Boatman, Vice President of Worldwide Studios for EA Mobile. "We are excited for EA Mobile titles to be among the first games to deliver this type of quality visual experience to the mobile handset."
"Advances in high resolution mobile displays, the rapidly dropping cost of mobile content storage, faster mobile networks and advances in low power media processing are enabling a new generation of high definition mobile devices with significantly improved multimedia quality," said Billy Pidgeon, Program Manager, Consumer Markets: Games for IDC. "Low power 3D hardware graphics acceleration will allow developers to create games for convergent mobile devices that can compete with or surpass games for dedicated handheld gaming devices. True high resolution 3D graphics will entice consumers to download and play more mobile games, increasing revenue for publishers and operators."
BCM2727 Technical Information
Broadcom BCM2727 technology provides unprecedented levels of mobile multimedia processing to mobile devices, significantly raising the bar in terms of capabilities for digital video capture, high resolution still photography, and advanced 2D and 3D mobile gaming. It is the industry's first low power multimedia processor that enables high definition video camcorder and playback in cell phones and portable media players, supports an up to 12 megapixel digital camera, and delivers high performance yet ultra-low power 3D graphics for a world-class gaming experience. HD video, 3D games and high resolution 12 megapixel pictures can be displayed at top quality on full-sized HD televisions and monitors using an on-chip industry standard HDMI interface.
This groundbreaking multimedia technology adds a very significant competitive advantage to Broadcom's mobile platforms portfolio, enabling next generation cell phones to offer a quantum improvement in mobile audio, video, imaging, navigation and gaming experiences -- all with a similar battery life and size as today's compact multimedia handsets. The BCM2727 also supports over fifty multimedia standards, formats, codecs and resolutions, and provides the broadest mobile multimedia content support in the industry. Its extremely low power enables over 6 hours of gaming from a standard cell phone battery, with the chip consuming only 130mW.
