Continuous Computing Introduces Industry’s Highest Performance, Highest Capacity ATCA DPI Platforms
FlexTCA exceeds 200Gbps and has native 100GbE interfaces, providing the bandwidth and throughput necessary to create high-end policy control and wireless security systems
ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Continuous Computing®, the global provider of integrated platform solutions that address the mobile broadband capacity challenge, today released its latest FlexTCA™ integrated platforms delivering the highest performance and greatest capacity of any AdvancedTCA deep packet inspection (DPI) solution on the market. With this new platform family, network intelligence solutions such as Policy Charging and Enforcement Functions (PCEF) can exceed 200Gbps while wireless core and security applications can scale up to 320Gbps. Since “wire-speed” performance is so essential for DPI-based application differentiation and success, the cutting-edge FlexTCA family raises the ceiling on what is possible with mobile network packet processing platforms.
Wireless operators are seeking advanced capabilities such as traffic shaping, Internet offload and security to address the exponential growth of converged voice, video and data traffic over IP-based networks. The new FlexTCA platform delivers up to 4 times the processing density of previous generation ATCA offerings at a price per bit savings of up to 75 percent – a phenomenal advance in the price-for-performance ratio. FlexTCA enables network equipment providers (NEPs) to quickly and cost-effectively produce the scalable DPI applications operators need to monitor and control their network traffic while ensuring quality of service and experience (QoS/QoE).
Based on the latest 40G ATCA standards and combining best-in-class switch, packet processing and compute products, Continuous Computing’s FlexTCA capitalizes on the company’s FlowEngine™ DPI software framework (see separate news release) which combines the advanced load balancing and packet processing capabilities of an ecosystem of software vendors and the customization capabilities of professional services companies into a package that provides NEPs the complete foundation on which they can build and market advanced DPI applications.
“Policy enforcement and monitoring have become critical elements of assuring performance in today’s bandwidth-constrained networks, and DPI is the key enabling technology,” said Mike Coward, chief technology officer and co-founder of Continuous Computing. “With the skyrocketing increase in network traffic from advanced, bandwidth-hungry content like converged voice and video, packet processing solutions need to be able to mirror the resulting massive increase in throughput requirements. With up to 320Gbps system capacity, FlexTCA is the right platform at the right time.”
Continuous Computing’s new FlexTCA DPI platform is the first to come with native 100GbE interfaces – dual 100GbE CXP with active/standby capability and the option to aggregate other interface types (e.g., 10GbE SFP+ or 40GbE QSFP) for maximum speed. The flexibility afforded by this new platform is imperative for operators, whose networks are comprised of a number of different devices with varying interface speeds. The common trend in the industry, though, is toward 100GbE, and the FlexTCA platform provides NEPs a clear upgrade path.
Additionally, as policy enforcement functionality moves closer to the radio access network (RAN), specialist wireless protocol and application knowledge become critical – which is where Continuous Computing shines with its innovative Trillium® monitoring protocols and broad range of FlexTCA deployment options. With average system capacities ranging from 20Gbps – 60Gbps yet max-performance applications requiring up to 200Gbps and beyond, scalability is critical toward the edge and for this reason the new FlexTCA systems include high-capacity, mid-size and low-profile form factors to deliver optimal price vs. performance vs. size.
Incorporating state-of-the-art packet processing and switch blades, the new FlexTCA platforms continue to push Continuous Computing ahead of its competition in high capacity ATCA solutions. To date, the company has more than 21 DPI customer wins and more than five years of experience producing carrier-grade network intelligence solutions. The new FlexTCA platform family includes:
- Option of 14-, 6- or 2-slot platforms, all of which support 300W+ blades
- FlexCore™ ATCA-FM81 hub switch supporting 10GbE, 40GbE and 100GbE interfaces
- FlexPacket™ ATCA-PP81 DPI blade with dual NetLogic Microsystems XLP832 CPUs
- Optional hardware offload includes NetLogic NL11K KBP (Knowledge-based Processor) TCAM and specialized NetLogic NETL7 NLS2008 RegEx solutions for pattern matching
- FlexCompute™ ATCA-XE100 compute blade with the latest Intel microprocessors
Prototypes – including the XLP-based PP81 blades – have been shipping since January 2011 to support early customer development and complete FlexTCA systems are due to ship in April 2011.
