Ericsson Drops to #2 BTS Ranking in 2008 as Chinese OEMs capture 40% of the market

Redwood City, CA, July 6, 2009: The global base station market grew by 27.8% in units in 2008, according to the latest report from EJL Wireless Research titled "Global Base Station Market Analysis and Forecast, 2008-2013, 5th Edition." "The GSM/EDGE base station market again outpaced our projections from a year ago while WCDMA shipments were on target with prior year forecast," says founder and President, Earl Lum.

The report provides a unique perspective on the global shipments and demand for mobile base station equipment covering all major BTS equipment suppliers including Alcatel-Lucent, Datang Telecom, Ericsson, FiberHome Networks, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Huawei Technologies, Motorola, NEC, New Postcom, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel Networks., Panasonic, Potevio, and ZTE. The report covers the following air interface standards and their associated frequency allocations: GSM/EDGE, CDMA 2000, W-CDMA, TD-SCDMA, LTE and iDEN.

"Huawei was the number one ranked OEM globally while Ericsson was the largest GSM supplier. NSN was the leader in the W-CDMA market while ZTE led the CDMA market," says Lum. "We expect LTE BTS shipments to begin in 2009 and become the largest segment by 2013. Asia Pacific remains the driving force for global shipments as China, India, and other SE Asian countries continue to aggressively deploy 2G/3G networks," says Lum.
