TV White Spaces Database Solution Enables Users to Identify and Use Available TV White Space Frequencies Throughout the U.S.

LAKE MARY, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Spectrum Bridge, whose software solutions are leading the way in improving the availability, access and allocation of wireless spectrum, announced today that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has conditionally named Spectrum Bridge a TV bands device database administrator. The decision to appoint Spectrum Bridge was disclosed yesterday in a FCC Order as part of the process which began in January 2010, when the FCC sought proposals from technology vendors for the administration of TV White Spaces for commercial use.

“Spectrum Bridge would like to thank the FCC and OET [Office of Engineering] in their decision to appoint Spectrum Bridge as one of the TV bands device database administrators. Our commitment has been demonstrated by the four deployed trial white spaces networks, referenced in the Commission order adopting the rules,” said Peter Stanforth, CTO of Spectrum Bridge. “Their decision opens the doors for tremendous innovation, allowing a wide range of organizations and wireless users to take advantage of this new spectrum availability in an effective and fair way.”

To ensure that TV White Spaces networks do not cause interference with licensed television broadcasts and other protected users, they are monitored by Spectrum Bridge’s intelligent TV White Spaces Network Management Application and integrated database. This database dynamically assigns non‐interfering frequencies to white space devices, and adapts to new TV broadcasts, licensed microphone users as well as other TV band users operating in the area.

This announcement validates Spectrum Bridge’s work in this space, and demonstrates their track record of innovation and development. Working with key industry players like Dell, Google, and Microsoft, the company has developed and deployed operational broadband networks using TV White Spaces in various U.S. cities, showcasing a multitude of applications that can be made available in the near future.

In 2008, Spectrum Bridge launched the industry’s first online wireless spectrum exchange, a Web-based marketplace called SpecEx that makes it easy to buy, sell and lease spectrum, and is aligned with the FCC’s goals to improve the efficient use of available spectrum. Over the past few years, SpecEx.com has accumulated a growing and estimated $500 million worth of inventory in a wide range of spectrum bands, and has increased its member services and resources.

Most recently, Spectrum Bridge released the U-NII Device Interference Advisor (UDIA), an online database that mitigates potential interference in the 5GHz frequency band, which is shared with Terminal Doppler Weather Radars (TDWR). The UDIA database was developed to promote cooperation between the federal agencies including the National Telecommunications and Information Association (NTIA), FCC, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the wireless industry to ensure safe and effective operation of the FAA's TDWR network.

TV White Spaces availability can be determined for any location in the U.S. by using the free search tool at www.ShowMyWhiteSpace.com, or by downloading the free Spectrum Bridge TV White Spaces application from the smart phone application stores.
