MaaS360 Platform Now Delivers Automated Enforcement That Reduces Security Threats for Mobile Computing

BLUE BELL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Fiberlink®, the Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) company, today unveiled its new MaaS360 Compliance Engine, which helps companies meet regulatory requirements and implement compliance best practices to secure smartphones and tablets. This new, proactive approach to mobile device management (MDM) provides continuous compliance monitoring and automated enforcement, eliminating the need for IT staff to take action manually when devices and users do not comply with corporate policies.

Companies in more regulated industries face increasing pressures to enforce corporate compliance to standards such as FINRA, HIPAA, and PCI DSS for a broad range of consumer mobile devices, without expanding their own resources. The MaaS360 Compliance Engine achieves two important goals: it ensures that all mobile devices are in compliance with policies and it moves any devices in violation into a restricted policy until remediated.

MaaS360’s Compliance Engine lets IT administrators easily define and implement powerful compliance rules for smartphones and tablets to deal with specific events and contextual changes. Managed devices are continuously monitored for violation of defined rules or events. If a violation occurs, MaaS360 immediately and automatically takes action by warning the user with onscreen messaging, blocking corporate email access or even wiping the device’s memory to factory default settings.

MaaS360 automates the following tasks—previously handled manually by IT:

  • Device enrollment: For those companies providing mobile device support through Exchange Active Sync or Lotus Notes Traveler, MaaS360 automates the enrollment process to provide more comprehensive MDM. As an example, when employees use their personal devices for work, MaaS360 detects which users have mobile access to email on their devices but have not enrolled in MDM and notifies the user to complete the enrollment process.
  • Minimum version checking: As the number of device types and operating system versions expand, it has become increasingly difficult for IT to protect corporate access. Administrators can define rules that automatically block devices that do not meet minimum OS version requirements, especially those that have known security vulnerabilities or do not meet encryption requirements. Users can be alerted in real-time that an OS upgrade is required, and if it’s not upgraded, compliance enforcement action can be taken.
  • Detecting “jailbroken” and rooted devices: Users can create serious security threats by installing apps outside of an application store or customizing the device if they jailbreak or root their devices. Maas360 detects these rogue devices and immediately messages the user, warning them that the situation needs to be remediated. IT can then prevent access to corporate resources like mail, calendaring and contacts, or create even more stringent rules.
  • Disallowing applications: To help prevent corporate data loss, IT staff can create rules that monitor when an employee downloads unauthorized apps and automatically notify them that it must be removed or they will lose access to corporate resources.

“Our customers want to take a more proactive approach to compliance management and personalize the rules and actions for their specific needs,” said John Nielsen, product manager at Fiberlink. “With Compliance Engine, we have even built in the flexibility to deliver real-time notifications to administrators, making them aware of the most pressing violations.”
