Fon WiFi sharing technology becomes a standard feature in Broadcom’s DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem and gateway SoCs

MADRID--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Fon, the world’s largest WiFi network, today announced the industry’s first Fon-ready Broadcom chipsets for DOCSIS® 3.0 devices, Broadcom Corporation is a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications. Broadcom’s DOCSIS 3.0-based system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions feature a software development kit (SDK) that enables manufacturers to build Fon functionality directly into their customer premises equipment (CPEs) without any additional development.

"Fon has built a WiFi network with over 2.5 million hotspots, and Telcos, ISPs and manufacturers are increasingly looking for ways to give their customers access to it,” said Alex Puregger, Fon’s COO. “We are pleased to work with Broadcom as they lead the way in integrating Fon at the chipset level.”

"We are pleased to offer our customers Fon WiFi sharing technology for the very latest in connectivity," said Brian Wheeler, Senior Product Line Manager at Broadcom. “Fon’s WiFi network will enable consumers to use and share their WiFi connection securely to enjoy videos, movies and games at WiFi speeds using only a small portion of their overall bandwidth.”

Broadcom’s cable modem manufacturers, who buy the latest generation Broadcom chipsets, will receive the standard SDK with Fon software and other new features and fixes included. The SDK will allow manufacturers to customize new CPEs and easily upgrade their installed base of products and meet the specific demands of customers, like ISPs, who want to deliver Fon as a feature in their routers, in less time.

Fon currently partners with leading broadband service providers, hardware manufacturers and Telco operators, including British Telecom, Comstar-MTS Russia, SFR, and ZON Portugal who offer Fon-ready services.
