How AT&T is Tackling the Surge of Tweets, Texts, Calls, Pix and Vids from Comic-Con
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AT&T has increased its network capacity by more than four times in and around the San Diego Convention Center to make sure the record crowds at Comic-Con can tweet, blog, stream and twitpic to their hearts content.
Chris Sambar, director of sales for AT&T in San Diego, said AT&T engineers tried to envision what would happen with 135,000 people showing up the first day, all bearing smart phones and many in costume. He said AT&T has “pretty much thrown everything we could at it to ensure a high level of coverage both inside the convention center and nearby.”
It is the equivalent of going from four to sixteen lanes on a freeway to keep traffic moving.
Comic-Con International reported that it expected to have record attendance of 135,000 during the four-day run from July 21 to 24, up from 130,000 in 2010, for what is billed as “the largest of any comics or pop culture convention in the country.”
That’s more than attend the Super Bowl, NASCAR events, world cup soccer and other huge gatherings. And it goes on for days.
Sambar said the increased coverage was just one aspect of the AT&T commitment to network enhancements throughout Southern California. He said AT&T has invested $370 million in the San Diego metro area alone on wireless and wireline networks from 2008-2010, with more on the way.
