Interop 2010 Panel: Everything over 10 Gigabit Ethernet – the Video
MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Aquantia, the leading developer of mainstream 10GBASE-T PHY solutions, has released footage of the “Everything over 10 Gigabit Ethernet” panel presented at Interop 2010 Las Vegas by Aquantia and its co-panelists Arista Networks, Dell, Dell’Oro Group and Intel. The video can be viewed anytime at www.aquantia.com/news_videos.php.
This panel brought together prime influencers in data center server, switch and convergence technologies, to review the rise of 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) and LAN on Motherboard in the data center. In front of a packed audience, the panel debated the impact of ‘everything over 10GbE’, interconnect advances on virtualization, storage networks, cost control and performance optimization. They strongly concluded that the market now has the critical mass for convergence over 10GE.
Seamus Crehan, vice president of network adapters and SAN market research with Dell’Oro Group, opened the panel with forecasts of 10GE growth through 2014, also stating that “Most future growth in 10 Gigabit Ethernet will be in copper, with the majority of that to occur in 10GBASE-T.” According to Dell’Oro, switches and standalone adapter cards for 10GBASE-T will ramp quite nicely in the second half of 2010.
Anshul Sadana, vice president of systems engineering with Arista Networks, Inc., described 80% of data center traffic as server to server and server to storage, and stated that a number of Arista’s customers in 12 to 18 month server planning cycles are upgrading to 10GE. He stated “It’s a myth that 10GBASE-T isn't ready for mainstream,” and that “We believe 10GBASE-T is quite ready for the data center today, because of its high density, backwards compatibility to 1GE and Cat5e/Cat6 cabling.”
Gary Gumanow, senior product line manager with Dell Equallogic, added that “Virtualization is a killer application for 10GE. Twitter, Facebook and other social apps are putting a lot of backend pressure on the network.” He continued, “You’ll see storage arrays moving to 10GBASE-T and multi-speed. Dell typically plans one year ahead, so the market will see mainstream adoption of 10GBASE-T numbers in the not-too-distant future, especially as virtualization continues to ramp.”
Dave Chalupsky, network product architect with Intel Corp., described the current market as “screaming for 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Payback (on migrating to 2010 multicore servers with consolidation over 10GE) is five months, in terms of savings of power, management, software licenses and footprint. Volume adoption of Ethernet has traditionally been driven by LAN on Motherboard implementations, and it’s about to kick in for 10 Gigabit Ethernet.”
Phil Delansay, vice president of business development with Aquantia Corp., summarized that the “technology advances of 10GBASE-T enable data center managers to cost-justify the higher performance of 10GE on the basis of cost per gigabit of bandwidth when compared to 1GE.”
