ISTANBUL--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The 7th annual Eurasia Com opened today in Istanbul, gathering the cream of the telecommunications industry from Turkey, the CIS, Central Asia and Europe.

The opening keynote session included presentations from leading Russia-based mobile operator giants MTS (represented by VP Oleg Raspopov) and Vimpelcom (with CIS Marketing Director Anton Telegin), whose presence reaches a great part of the region covered by the event. They attracted many questions from the audience on their investments in the region and how they address some of the challenges experienced in many markets, particularly in terms of network infrastructure and connectivity.

The fixed and wireless markets were discussed too, in a debate with the CEOs of Azqtel in Azerbaijan and Neotel in Macedonia, who talked about their WiMAX strategies, and in a market overview by Stephen Wilson, Sr Analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media, who said: "There are still lots of opportunities for growth in fixed markets in the region and we're forecasting penetration levels to rise significantly in the next five years."

The major issue of regional connectivity and how to improve broadband access was addressed in the last two panel discussions of the morning, with interesting contributions from representatives of ISPs, alternative service providers, satellite players and international carriers.

The afternoon sessions looked at value-added services strategies and mobile broadband, with presentations from more operators and stakeholders in the region.

In addition to the debates in the conference, participants have been enjoying the networking opportunities. "Eurasia Com is not only a place to learn about the evolution of the market," says Julie Rey, Conference Director at organisers Informa Telecoms & Media, "it is also a great opportunity to share experiences with peers from across the region and to build business partnerships."

After a drinks reception to finish the first day, Eurasia Com will continue on Wednesday 30th, with more presentations and interactive discussions.
