Nexius Experts Explain Wireless Network Evolution, Forecast Rapid LTE Adoption Worldwide and Offer Network Operators a Planning Framework

RESTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Can the explosive hunger for wireless data speed and usage be fed by existing technology? A new cellular industry report from wireless services and software company Nexius explains how the latest wireless networking technology, long term evolution (LTE), a high-speed 4G network technology that wireless operators are beginning to roll out in earnest, is up to the task. LTE is poised to buck the too-little-too-late pattern of past technologies, but most of us will have to wait.

Written for network operator executives tasked with leading and overseeing wireless 4G deployments, LTE: Paving the Path Forward presents an overview of the evolution of LTE technology, outlines wireless 4G technology options and strategies for rapidly delivering high-speed networks to market and offers a launch planning framework.

The report is authored by Nexius wireless industry experts, Joe Baeumel, VP of Professional Services, and Paul-Andre, VP of Technology, and is available for download at: http://www.nexius.com/company/resources.

“LTE is the next step in the evolution of both CDMA and GSM standards and is the needed fourth generation in wireless network evolution. 2010-2019 will be the decade for LTE and LTE-Advanced,” commented Nexius report author Joe Baeumel. “LTE’s promise and ideal timing simply outweigh its challenges. Even Clearwire has announced that testing of LTE Advanced-ready technology could achieve far greater speeds and capacity than any network today and that it will add the new technology to its 4G network. The proof is in the plans.”

Full of facts, stats and forecasts, the report recognizes Scandinavian operator TeliaSonera as launching the first commercial LTE services in the world in 2010 and includes live rollouts or plans announced this year by top U.S. operators including AT&T, MetroPCS and Verizon. At the close of Q2 2011, LTE service is available in close to 100 cities, which is exciting for select, geographically-advantaged subscribers.

“Soon, subscribers will be able to share video and HD pictures at lightning fast speeds if their LTE service is running anywhere near LTE’s theoretical, effective (expected) data rate of 100Mbps. Such speed could make cable operators obsolete as voice, Internet, and TV programs could be delivered and distributed via an LTE smartphone,” added Baeumel.

While bullish on LTE, the authors weigh opportunities with realities and concede that LTE advantages are tempered by several rollout realities, including spectrum supply vs. demand, legal wrangling, supplier management, timeline constraints, testing requirements, and mitigation costs. It will be several years before LTE becomes fully mainstream. A handful of lucky subscribers can enjoy faster speeds today, but it’s 3G at best, for now, for the rest of consumers.

Operator proof points and plans, as well as a snapshot of the challenges LTE faces, are outlined in a related Nexius LTE blog post on the Nexius site.
