Nokia Siemens Networks Elevates LTE Commitment in North America
|
Dallas, Texas, USA - December 11, 2008 Nokia Siemens Networks is taking another significant step in further accelerating the development of Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless technology in North America with the creation of a Next Gen Technology Lab in Dallas, Texas. This will ensure that the unique requirements of operators in North America are fully incorporated into the company's LTE developments. The R&D center will support North American operators through development, verification and interoperability activities, from network infrastructure to mobile devices, ensuring Nokia Siemens Networks LTE technology roadmaps meet operator needs. This will be the hub for all LTE trials in the U.S. and Canada with inaugural trials in 1Q09. Additionally, the lab will foster local product development to address specific North America requirements, and will drive LTE ecosystem development to accelerate service adoption when LTE networks are deployed. "The new lab will further enable us to capitalize on the exceptional market opportunities for next generation networks in North America and the growing expectations of consumers and enterprises for bandwidth hungry mobile applications," said Sue Spradley, president, North America, Nokia Siemens Networks. "We look forward to continuing to drive LTE innovation, ecosystem development, and momentum with North American carriers to advance the U.S. and Canada's communications position in the global landscape." Juha Lappalainen, previously CTO of Nokia Siemens Networks North American operations, has been named Head of LTE for North America and will oversee the lab's development as well as domestic R&D advancements. The Next Gen Technology Lab will be the newest addition to the company's presence of 2200 employees in more than 12 cities across North America, and will complement the region's activities in R&D, technology interoperability, professional services, strategy, sales, marketing and corporate functions. Long Term Evolution (LTE), the next generation of mobile networks like GSM, WCDMA and CDMA, promises delivery of new multimedia intensive and rich call applications by improving data speeds, reducing latency and building on a scalable flat network design. It is the latest mobile network technology, currently undergoing standardization by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a global standards organization. In North America, major operators have already announced plans to migrate their networks to LTE in the future. Nokia Siemens Networks is the leading provider of mobile broadband solutions and driver of related standardization. The company is the forerunner in LTE with its I-HSPA flat architecture innovation providing already today a smooth migration path for operators to LTE. The company was the first one to demonstrate LTE technology with data speeds in the 160Mb/s range as well as a successful handover between LTE and HSPA already in 2006, and continued breaking records in 2007 by demonstrating a multi-user field trial in an urban environment. In February 2008 Nokia Siemens Networks showcased a live demo on commercial hardware and launched its LTE solution based on the Flexi Multimode Base Station. Additionally in 2008, Nokia Siemens Networks started shipping its LTE-compatible Flexi Multimode Base Station. Earlier this month, the company announced that it was first to successfully demonstrate Relaying technology proposed for LTE-Advanced, which is mobile broadband communications beyond LTE. LTE-Advanced is currently being studied by 3GPP for Release 10 and will be submitted towards ITU-R as the 3GPP Radio Interface Technology proposal. Building on the company's technological leadership, Nokia Siemens Networks together with Nokia has continued to pioneer LTE and LTE-Advanced technology research and standardization work in 3GPP with a number of major contributions in the 3GPP RAN standardization and its commercialization.
