RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The North Carolina Technology Association (NCTA) announced today that Matthew Szulik, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Red Hat, has been named winner of NCTA’s 2010 Outstanding Achievement award. The award honors Szulik for his consistent efforts to advance technology throughout his career and is one of NCTA’s 21 distinct awards celebrating innovation and excellence in North Carolina technology. Szulik will provide remarks at NCTA’s annual “0021” Awards gala, presented with title sponsor Grant Thornton to be held at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center in Durham, N.C. from 6-9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10. The theme for this year’s event is “A License to Excel” and more than 500 business and technology leaders from across the state are expected to be in attendance.

Szulik served as Red Hat’s CEO since 1999 and Chairman of Red Hat's Board of Directors since 2002. Szulik moved into the Chairman’s role in 2008. Under Szulik’s leadership and vision, Red Hat became the only NYSE-listed company to sell “free” software. Szulik is credited with the authorship of the “free” economic model. Szulik is an Ernst &Young Entrepreneur of the Year National Winner and inductee into the World Entrepreneur Hall of Fame. Szulik was recognized by Computer Business Review as one of the most influential technologists of the decade.

“I am honored to receive NCTA’s 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award,” said Szulik. “North Carolinians from all sectors have contributed to the advancement of technology and innovation in our state, and I look forward to celebrating with many of them at the 21 Awards event.”

The Outstanding Achievement award is the only award to be determined thus far, with nominations for the other 20 awards closing on Tuesday, Aug. 31. Additionally, NCTA is still accepting nominations for the “Technology Executive of the Year” award. Finalists in this category will be announced in early September, with the winner selected by popular vote through NCTA’s web site. This people’s choice award was introduced last year and recognizes a C-level or senior executive of a technology company for leadership within his or her company and community. Nominations for all award categories can be submitted at http://www.nctechnology.org/get-involved/signature_events/21_awards/default.aspx.

“We are pleased to announce Matthew as the winner of this year’s Outstanding Achievement award,” said Brooks Raiford, NCTA’s president and CEO. “He has served our state and his company well, faithfully championing technology throughout his career. We hope his example will serve as an encouragement for individuals to nominate other deserving companies and technology executives for consideration in the remaining awards.”
