Chomp Monthly App Search Report Also Shows Monetization Increases on Android and iOS

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Chomp today released its monthly app search data reflecting the most significant consumer search trends for Android and Apple iOS apps during the month of October. Chomp’s most recent report shows that mobile device users turned to Halloween mobile apps significantly over the course of October, with a sharp increase over Halloween weekend and traffic peaking on Oct. 31. The most popular apps according to downloads were Pumpkins vs. Monsters, Angry Bird Seasons, Bubble Blast Halloween, Coin Dozer Halloween, Halloween! and Halloween Live Wallpaper.

On Android, larger categories such as games, utilities, and entertainment, saw slight downticks, while books, travel, and sports saw increases in category share. For iOS, games increased search share from 31.5% to 32.6% (up from 27.7% two months ago). Utility apps increased search share from 6.0% to 7.1% as wallpaper and other customization apps increase in popularity on iOS. Reference apps nearly halved search share from 8.8% last month to 4.9% this month.

App monetization increased by 4% on Android and 2% on iOS platforms for the month of October. This month users opted for the paid versions of many apps or for premium priced games such as Cut the Rope, Zenonia, Need for Speed, Asphalt 6, and several paid launcher apps.

“Free” was again the top search term on Android, with Drag Racing making its debut in International Apps and Adobe Flash Player 10.3 remaining incredibly popular on Android devices. The top five Android apps were Dropbox, Google Sky Map, Ebay, Angry Birds and Dolphin Browser HD.

App search abroad showed more diversity on iOS. Assassin’s Creed Altair’s Chronicle remained popular, while Dermander Panarama debuted in Top International Apps. The top iOS apps for October were TuneIn Radio, Instagram, Zombie Highway, TuneWiki and Doodle Jump.

Over two billion apps are being downloaded each month and the number of available Android and iOS apps has surged to almost one million. As the number of apps increase, so does the need for effective app search. On the Android platform, 83% of searches are made by app function (e.g. “adventure games,” “photography,” etc.) and only 17% by the actual app name. On the iOS platform 84% of searches are made by app function and only 16% by the app name.

About Chomp, Inc.

Founded in 2009 by Ben Keighran and Cathy Edwards, Chomp, Inc. is the only company to enable app search based on what an app actually does. Two billion apps are being downloaded every month. As the number of apps explodes, it’s become difficult for users to find the perfect app for what they want to do. Chomp’s patent-pending algorithm is able to understand what an app does and what a user wants and then makes the best match. Chomp also allows developers to effectively integrate app search into their content. Chomp powers search for a range of companies, including Verizon, Carphone Warehouse, Blekko, 148Apps.com and @aplusk. The company is funded by leading Silicon Valley investors, including Ron Conway, BlueRun Ventures as well as a number of ex-Google angel investors. The company is based in San Francisco, CA and can be found at www.chomp.com
