Product to Support PDIF, PDG and Security Gateway Function for WiFi and Femtocell Networks

TEWKSBURY, Mass., September 22, 2008 - Starent Networks, Corp. (Nasdaq:

STAR), a leading provider of infrastructure solutions that enable mobile operators to deliver multimedia services, today announced its Security Gateway - providing mobile operators a secure, high performance access gateway for emerging un-secure wireless broadband networks.

Mobile operators are expanding their consumer and enterprise offerings to devices that run over un-secure networks such as Wireless LAN (WLAN) and Femtocells leveraging existing DSL, cable and eventually WiMAX broadband networks. In these situations, the mobile operator may not control or own the access network.  As a result, they may lose control over security and performance. Starent Networks' Security Gateway provides operators a secure entry point into their core network that can monitor and manage traffic while providing subscribers a seamless service experience as they roam between the new un-secure networks and existing secure networks.

The Security Gateway function leverages the integrated intelligence, high-performance and distributed architecture capabilities of Starent Networks' market leading ST40TM multimedia core platform.  Starent Networks is targeting its Security Gateway to provide standards-based security functionality for mobile networks including Packet Data Interworking Function (PDIF), Packet Data Gateway (PDG), Tunnel Terminating Gateway (TTG) and Femtocell Gateways, with future upgradeability to 4G technologies.

Furthermore, the Security Gateway allows operators to take advantage of Starent's In-Line Services providing real-time integrated subscriber, service and application intelligence with enforcement.  This approach allows for enhanced service capabilities, simplifies network topology, lowers latency through a more efficient flow of network traffic and can lead to reductions in expenditures.

"A key value behind our Security Gateway is its ability to be integrated with other network functions, such as PDSN, GGSN, SGSN, while providing a smooth network migration path to 4G networks such as LTE," said Ashraf Dahod, CEO of Starent Networks. "With our distributed architecture, WLAN applications can be flexibly added to an existing core network lowering the cost of deployment for these services."

Starent Networks is focused on the specific needs of the mobile operator packet core network. Each of its solutions - including the Security Gateway - delivers exceptional performance, while being designed for upgradeability to 4G/LTE requirements.  Starent Networks' solutions provide a migration path to next generation technologies through software upgrades, protecting operators' existing investments and eliminating the need for forklift upgrades.

Starent Networks' Security Gateway is currently in trials in multiple customer networks across the globe.
