Huawei captures the lead in $15.2B optical networking market

Huawei captures the lead in $15.2B optical networking market

Global spending of $3.6 billion in 3Q09 propelled by 33% increase in Asia-Pacific compared with 3Q08; Huawei strides ahead of long-time leader Alcatel-Lucent

November 11, 2009. Ovum today announced its preliminary 3Q09 results for global optical equipment networking vendors. The global optical networking (ON) market, led by strength in Asia-Pacific markets, totaled $3.6 billion, down 4% sequentially and down 10% compared with 3Q08. “Regional results were mixed: the bleeding in North America appears to have stopped; Asia-Pacific, led by China, continues to exceed expectations; and EMEA and SCA remain moribund,” remarked Ovum’s Vice President, Optical Networking, Dana Cooperson. “Several vendors are benefiting from China’s ON spending spree, which is being propelled by 3G mobile builds, but none more than Huawei. On strength that extends far beyond its home market, Huawei has taken the top spot over long-time leader Alcatel-Lucent in the $15.2 billion market.”

Top ten ON vendor share

With most of the major vendors’ 3Q09 results reported (Nortel being a major exception) and checked by Ovum, our preliminary analysis indicates that Huawei’s global revenues surpassed long-time leader Alcatel-Lucent’s revenues by over $100 million for each of the first three quarters this year. The Chinese vendor now leads the market by almost 3 percentage points.

Of the top ten vendors, only Huawei and ZTE, the dynamic duo of leading Chinese vendors, reported year-over-year revenue improvements, while quite a few showed sequential growth (Cisco, Fujitsu, NEC, Tellabs, and, by our estimate, Nortel). Besides Huawei taking the top berth, ZTE appears to have edged out Fujitsu for the number four slot. Nokia Siemens, which was the number five vendor as recently as 3Q08, appears to have slid just behind Tellabs into ninth. Cisco, meanwhile, just pushed out Ciena to re-enter the top ten.

IMS operator survey shows Huawei gaining and a shift toward video and mobile services

Campbell, CALIFORNIA, August 11, 2009—Communications market research firm Infonetics Research released results from its IMS Plans: Global Service Provider Survey, published last week as part of its Service Provider VoIP and IMS Continuous Research Service (CRS). The survey provides a strategic overview of service provider IMS network plans, service offerings, core product features and capabilities, drivers and barriers to deploying IMS, and ratings of 10 IMS vendors: Acme Packet, Alcatel-Lucent, BroadSoft, Cisco, Ericsson, HP, Huawei, Nokia Siemens Networks, Sonus, and ZTE.

ANALYST NOTE

"Our 2009 IMS service provider survey indicates that the IMS market is advancing from early-stage services to the next phase. The two most important indicators are the higher number of service providers planning to offer services beyond fixed-line voice—such as video and mobile services—by 2011, and the shift in IMS deployment drivers, which include the opportunity to offer converged services, deploy new applications and services, and consolidate networks," says Diane Myers, Infonetics Research’s Directing Analyst for Service Provider VoIP and IMS.

"On the vendor front, Ericsson continues to be the leading IMS vendor, but Huawei has made the most progress in terms of deployments and vendor perceptions. Huawei poses a credible and serious threat to Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent, and Nokia Siemens based on the number of providers with Huawei IMS products under evaluation, and overall perception of Huawei across a broad set of criteria," Myers added.

IMS SERVICE PROVIDER SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS

80% of Infonetics’ service provider respondents run fixed voice over IMS today or will by 2011, making fixed-line VoIP service the current mainstay of IMS deployments

More than half of the service provider respondents plan to deploy video telephony and converged mobile/fixed-line services over the next 12–18 months

The top three IMS applications operators expect to offer over the next two years are mobile-related: FMC, mobile presence, and mobile messaging

REPORT SYNOPSIS

Infonetics’ IMS Plans: Global Service Provider Survey provides insights into service provider IMS (IP multimedia subsystem) network strategies, deployment drivers and barriers, service offerings, CSCF (Call Session Control Function) and HSS (Home Subscriber Server) deployments, product feature preferences, product vendor selection criteria, brand awareness ratings, and a vendor scorecard.

The scorecard provides service provider ratings of Acme Packet, Alcatel-Lucent, BroadSoft, Cisco, Ericsson, HP, Huawei, Nokia Siemens Networks, Sonus, and ZTE on 10 criteria: IMS vision, technology, system integration capability, management, price-to-performance ratio (value), pricing, product roadmap, security, service and support, and financial stability.

Infonetics surveyed knowledgeable purchase decision-makers at 20 incumbent, wireless, and competitive service providers that have deployed IMS core equipment or plan to by 2010. The respondents represent almost one-third of worldwide service provider revenue and capex, and 37% of total EMEA public service provider capital spending, representing a good portion of the overall EMEA landscape, where the majority of IMS activity is.

Of the operators surveyed, 75% are from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), 10% from Asia Pacific, 10% from North America, and 5% from Central and Latin America (CALA).

Huawei joins Motorola and Samsung as WiMAX Radio Access Network (RAN) vendor for Clearwire's 4G network

Other strategic infrastructure suppliers include Cisco, Ciena and DragonWave

Company to release second quarter financial results later today

KIRKLAND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Clearwire Communications, LLC, an operating subsidiary of Clearwire Corporation, (NASDAQ: CLWR) today announced the completion of its 4G network infrastructure supplier selections, following the signing of an agreement that adds Huawei to a vendor mix that includes Motorola, Samsung, Cisco, Ciena and DragonWave.

Under the new agreement announced today, Huawei will supply WiMAX radio access network (RAN) equipment to facilitate Clearwire's rollout of super fast mobile Internet service across the United States, called CLEARTM. Specifically, Huawei will provide several key infrastructure pieces, including base stations, element management system (EMS) components, and related network hardware and software. As part of today's announcement, Clearwire named several other strategic suppliers for the network rollout, which include: Motorola and Samsung for RAN equipment; Cisco for the core Internet Protocol (IP) Next-Generation Network infrastructure; Ciena for base station switching; and DragonWave for the network's microwave backhaul transport; Motorola also provides additional microwave backhaul equipment.

"Our new network is specifically designed to deliver an unmatched combination of 4G speeds, capacity, and mobility to meet the growing demand for wireless broadband services," said Dr. John Saw, Chief Technology Officer for Clearwire. "As such, we have designed an all-IP network that is efficient, low-cost and scalable using standards-based technology from industry-leading providers. Our existing agreements with Motorola, Samsung, Cisco, and DragonWave, plus today's addition of Huawei, provide us with the capabilities and support necessary to deliver super fast mobile Internet in more ways for both our customers and strategic wholesalers."

"Clearwire's vision for connecting the Internet to people, not just places, and their dedication to building the first nationwide WiMAX network in the United States is an exciting opportunity for Huawei," said Wan Biao, President of Huawei Wireless Product Line. "Today's announcement is an important milestone and represents a significant step toward establishing Huawei's presence in North America and further demonstrates our commitment to delivering high-quality products and services to our customers."

A CLEAR Difference

CLEAR offers the first super fast mobile Internet service that works as fast on the go as it does at home. Unlike other wireless services, CLEAR delivers a mobile broadband Internet experience on par with speeds typically experienced only on wired connections, like DSL.

The CLEAR customer experience is similar to that provided by Wi-Fi, but without the short range limitations of a traditional hot spot. CLEAR uses a 4G technology, called WiMAX, that differs from Wi-Fi and provides service areas measured in miles, not feet.

Clearwire Second Quarter 2009 Earnings

Clearwire will announce its second quarter 2009 financial results later today at approximately 4 p.m. Eastern Time. The financial release will be posted at http://newsroom.clearwire.com. Clearwire executives will host a conference call and webcast following the release at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time. A live broadcast of the conference call will be available online on the company's Investor Relations website located at: http://investors.clearwire.com.

[Oslo, Norway, 4 June 2009] Huawei and TeliaSonera/Netcom, today announced the world' s first mobile broadband Internet connection over a live commercial LTE network in Oslo, Norway.

This demonstration saw download speeds to mobile devices greater than what is currently available. Based on Huawei' s LTE solution, TeliaSonera' s LTE network will benefit from high quality and extensive capacity to provide end users with the best mobile communication experience.

Mr. August Baumann President of Netcom (subsidiary of TeliaSonera in Norway) says: "We appreciate the professional implementation from Huawei and we are very pleased to make this world' s first LTE session in Norway. It is a significant step bringing our customers much closer to real fourth generation mobile broadband service. It is also a milestone in the cooperation between TeliaSonera and Huawei."

"We are proud and excited to support TeliaSonera in completing its mobile broadband connection over the world' s first live LTE network", says James Chen, Managing Director of Huawei Nordic Office, "The first LTE session reflects Huawei' s leadership in the most cutting-edge of technologies and its ability to build LTE networks. We are well positioned to deliver a high quality network that will enable leading operators like TeliaSonera to achieve business success."

The first showcase on the live LTE network in Oslo, between a Laptop PC with a 4G modem and public Internet/Intranet included downloading of high resolution photos, music, movies and mobile business applications, at a speed much quicker than most available fixed internet accesses of today.

By adopting the LTE MIMO and OFDM technologies (Multiple Input Multiple Output and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex, key radio technologies of LTE), the download peak data rate can reach 150 Mbps in one LTE cell with multiple terminals.

Recession isn't holding back mobile broadband subscribers

London, UK, March 17, 2009—Market research firm Infonetics Research released the fourth quarter (4Q08) edition of its Mobile Broadband Cards, Routers, Services, and Subscribers report last week. Highlights follow.

“With HSPA going live around many parts of the world, mobile broadband adoption accelerated in 2008, as mobile networks finally started to deliver on the promise of high speed mobile access. This, combined with better devices, gave the market tremendous impetus over the past year. Growth in the number of mobile broadband subscribers hit triple-digit percents in all the major world regions in 2008, indicating a booming market.”

Richard Webb, Directing Analyst – WiMAX, Microwave, and Mobile Devices – Infonetics Research

MARKET RESEARCH REPORT HIGHLIGHTS

Worldwide, the number of mobile broadband subscribers (including W-CDMA/HSPA and CDMA2000/EV-DO) jumped 125% in 2008 over 2007, hitting 210.5 million, and are expected to top 1 billion by 2013

Sales of mobile broadband PC cards and embedded mobile broadband cards topped $4.1 billion worldwide in 2008, and are expected to continue gathering momentum in 2009

Worldwide mobile broadband router manufacturer revenue grew 114% in 2008 over 2007, although sales slowed in the second half of the year

Huawei and Sony Ericsson tie for lead market share in mobile broadband cards by revenue in 2008, with Sony Ericsson's strength based on W-CDMA/HSPA cards and dongles, and Huawei's based on both HSPA and EV-DO and a broader mix of PC card and embedded card formats

Several other major players, including Sierra, Novatel, and Option, also achieved market share in the mobile broadband cards segment

Service provider revenue from mobile broadband services grew 45% in 2008 to hit $49.8 billion worldwide, and, though the global recession is hampering growth, mobile broadband service revenue is expected to grow in healthy double-digit percents over the next 5 years

REPORT SYNOPSIS

[2008 GSMA MOBILE ASIA CONGRESS, MACAU - 19 NOVEMBER 2008] Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. ("Huawei"), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions worldwide, has announced that to date it has shipped over 20 million mobile broadband units to over 115 countries covering Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, North America, Middle East and Africa. Having worked closely with more than 230 international operators, Huawei's mobile broadband is the preferred choice for operators around the world.

The growth in mobile broadband products including data card, dongles and embedded modems has far exceeded the forecast of the industry in 2006 and 2007 for two consecutive years. Over the next three years, industry analysts expect the mobile broadband market to grow at an amazing Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 46%, with annual shipments reaching 100 million by 2011.

"Huawei has emerged as the gold standard in partnering with operators for mobile broadband devices. Its proven ability to focus on operators' needs, to provide differentiated customization, including award-winning industrial designs, and to deliver robust applications suites has been recognized by operators globally," said Edward Chen, CEO of Huawei Communication Technologies. "Huawei's robust R&D systems and processes are engineered to ensure a fast response to meet operators' terminal customization requirements. This has helped it achieve a commanding position in mobile broadband products. As the market leader, Huawei is firmly committed in its efforts to drive worldwide broadband penetration and the fast evolution of this technology."

Huawei also revealed today a partnership with GSMA, the global trade body for the mobile industry. The two have joined forces to help the mobile industry realize the huge potential market for consumer and industrial goods that can connect to 3G mobile networks. The cooperation will initially focus on bringing the benefits of continuous mobile connectivity to consumer electronics. Devices with embedded mobile connections can automatically exchange images, information and other data with mobile phones, computers or the Internet. The cooperation will help Huawei put forward more innovative products and solutions to people, business and society as a whole.
