Wireless Gaming Visionary Mike Yuen Joins Zeebo Executive Team
Zeebo, Inc. announced today that Mike Yuen has joined the Company as senior vice president of content and services. Yuen joins Zeebo from Qualcomm where he served as senior director of games and services. He begins his new role on August 17, 2009, and will report to Zeebo president & CEO John F. Rizzo.
Yuen, formally a member of the Zeebo board of directors, will be responsible for driving the worldwide content and services strategy for the Company. He will also lead Zeebo's developer relations activity, including evangelizing, growing, maintaining, and supporting relationships with publishers and developers in games, education, and other content and services areas.
"Mike Yuen's passion for bringing a compelling interactive entertainment experience to consumers around the world helped make Zeebo a reality, and although he's always been a key voice and tireless advocate for the Company from the beginning, it is gratifying to officially welcome him to the Zeebo executive team," said Rizzo. "Our team, our partners and our customers will all benefit from Mike's leadership, strategic vision and ability to execute."
Yuen joined Qualcomm in June 2001 and as director of developer relations is widely credited with helping to create a global BREW ecosystem that has paid out more than $1 billion to content providers such as EA, Disney and Sony as of March 2007. He has been in the game industry for more than 12 years with companies including Accolade (Atari), GTE Entertainment and Hammerhead Entertainment. Yuen currently sits on the advisory board of the LA Games Conference and has previously served on the boards of Game Developers Conference Mobile, the San Diego Software Industry Council and Mobile Entertainment Forum Americas. He has also been a judge for the International Mobile Gaming Awards and the Independent Games Festival.
"Joining Zeebo is a tipping point in my professional career and now is the right time for me to go 'all in'," said Yuen. "The circle is complete and what began as an idea is now a real commercial product on retail shelves in Brazil with more countries to come. I'm excited about the opportunity to work even more closely with the team to help establish Zeebo as the home entertainment and education platform of choice for the next billion consumers in emerging markets of the world."
Zeebo is the first 3G wireless system to provide compelling digital entertainment, gaming and educational content for consumers in emerging global markets. Content delivery and UI system updates occur over-the-air and are completely transparent to the end user. The consumer simply connects the Zeebo to their television set and the system automatically connects to the ZeeboNet Wireless Network. Zeebo, Inc. works with local partners to co-brand, market, sell and in some cases manufacture the Zeebo system in target countries.
Zeebo fosters the development and monetization of local content by preventing piracy through secure wireless, over-the-air delivery. In support of Zeebo's initial launch in Brazil, leading game publishers and developers, including Capcom, Com2uS, Digital Chocolate, EA Mobile, Gameloft, Gamevil, Glu, Id Software, Machineworks Northwest LLC, Namco Networks, PopCap Games and THQ, have developed a wide array of titles for the Zeebo platform.
