Why it went wrong: A report on the blog Engadget stated definitively that AT&T Mobility and the personal navigation company Garmin were going to launch a GPS-centric Nuvifone in the third quarter of 2008. The price point provided was $500, plus a two-year contract and $19.99-a-month unlimited data and GPS plan. The blog had cited a survey [1] which attempted to get a read on how interested consumers would be in the phone if it was offered for $500. There was no definitive rollout plan cited, and the product never went anywhere. In fact, at the end of July, Garmin announced that it was delaying the phone [2], pushing it to 2009. Perhaps the delay was due to a perceived lack of demand, since most carriers offer GPS services already.
