Grading the top 10 U.S. carriers in the second quarter of 2009

Tools

The following is a countdown of the top 10 U.S. wireless carriers in the second quarter of 2009 by subscriber base, according to research firm Strategy Analytics, and includes major metrics--such as churn, ARPU and revenue--of each carrier.

This list does not include resellers or MVNOs, such as Virgin Mobile USA or TracFone Wireless.

Further, this list does not include Sprint Nextel's affiliates among Sprint's subscriber count, though it does include the carrier's "wholesale" subscribers, such as those who use the Amazon Kindle (which runs on Sprint's network).

Where is Tracfone?

Billy is right. Tracfone is larger in subs after T-Mo and then US Cellular.

They are re-sellers, not carriers. Tracfone isn't publicly traded, so maybe they aren't ranked because they don't publish those metrics?

Howdy! Thanks for your comments. As it says in the introduction, "This list does not include resellers or MVNOs, such as Virgin Mobile USA or TracFone Wireless." So that's why TracFone is not listed. --Mike Dano, managing editor.

TracFone is not a "re-seller," they have a dedicated relationship with LG, Samsung, Motorola, etc. For the purposes of this article they're not a carrier because they lease airtime on other's networks. Also, they're a subsidiary of a public company, America Movil. TracFone's numbers are reported in America Movil's financial reports. If they were a traditional carrier they'd be the 3rd or 4th largest by subs.

reseller and MVNO are not about who made the phone, but rather where they get their minutes, etc. TracFone buys wholesale and sells retail, operating a "virtual network".
