Who are the world's Tier 2 handset makers?

Tools

It's no secret the Nokia is the world's No. 1 cell phone maker--the company commands almost 40 percent of the market. Further, most in the industry know which companies fill out the rest of the world's top-five manufacturers list: Samsung, LG, Motorola and Sony Ericsson--in that order.

But few market research firms will provide sales figures for the rest of the industry's cell phone players, which combined account for around 22 percent of a global market that ships more than 1 billion handsets annually. However, ABI's Kevin Burden has stepped forward to count down the market's Tier 2 cell phone players according to market share.

In the following pages, Burden outlines the world's Tier 2 handset players. Starting at No. 11 and counting up to No. 6, Burden discusses the sales strategies that have dropped these companies among the world's top cell phone manufacturers.

A few notes: ABI's numbers represent "sell in," or phone shipments into the retail channel, rather than "sell out," or sales to consumers. Further, ABI's ranking only counts phones that carry the manufacturer's brand. Therefore, phones that bandy a carrier's logo without a hint of which company actually built the device are not counted. Finally, the firm declined to provide specific sales numbers and only offers the market share rank among the industry's players.
