NEW ORLEANS--As usual, there was plenty to look at here on the CTIA Wireless show floor. Though a number of companies, including Nokia, Alcatel-Lucent and others, decided not to purchase booth space, other companies stepped into the breach to offer their own wares, sights and sounds.

And though this year's collection of booths didn't quite offer the extravagance of year's past, there was still plenty to take in. After all, the show floor is specifically geared to entice and entertain show-goers, and those exhibiting sometimes spend plenty of money in that pursuit.

Thus, here's a look at some of the sights from the show floor of this year's spring CTIA show.

NEW ORLEANS--Trade shows like the CTIA Wireless show here are routinely used as the launch space for a variety of new, shiny smartphones. Vendors typically hope to cash in on attendees' interest to generate enthusiasm for their products.

At this year's CTIA show, however, new smartphones are few and far between. Carriers and handset makers did introduce a handful of new phones, but the range of launches is nothing like the avalanche that has buried conference-goers in past years.

Nonetheless, it's worth taking a look at the latest and greatest the mobile phone market has to offer at this year's show.

Touring AT&T's 'Digital Life' automated home: In pictures

NEW ORLEANS--AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) offered press and analysts here a glimpse into its new "Digital Life," the business unit tasked with creating a home automation and monitoring business. The effort is an attempt by the carrier to catch up to the likes of Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) and Comcast that have already announced home automation products--but it's also an acknowledgement that AT&T could leverage its network capabilities into new areas such as remote monitoring, security and other machine-to-machine offerings.

In conjunction with the CTIA Wireless trade show here, AT&T set up a house in this city's Garden District to show off what its new Digital Life is capable of.

Touring a Sprint Network Vision cell site

Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) is in the midst of its multibillion-dollar Network Vision network modernization plan, which promises to consolidate and transform the carrier's networks. The project is centered around multi-mode base stations that will allow Sprint to light up LTE service, shut down its legacy iDEN network and improve CDMA coverage and capacity. Last week, as part of a briefing for reporters at its headquarters in Overland Park, Kan., Sprint allowed reporters to tour one of its Network Vision cell sites. Here's a brief window into how Network Vision is being deployed on the ground.

BARCELONA, Spain--There is no show quite like the Mobile World Congress trade show, held here annually at the stunningly beautiful Fira de Barcelona convention center. Though the show has clearly grown too big for its britches--the GSMA plans to move it to a larger venue in this city next year--MWC is nonetheless an event of epic (and crowded) proportions. Industry players from all corners gather here to network, see the latest kit and generally take in the sights of an industry on the cutting edge of technology.

But what is it really like on the show floor and elsewhere in Barcelona? We've put together a brief slideshow of some of the more notable sights here at MWC. There's plenty more to take in, but this is some of the best.

The phones of MWC 2012

BARCELONA, Spain--Attendees of the Mobile World Congress trade show here were deluged with a flood of new handsets. Vendors ranging from Nokia to HTC to ZTE announced new wares, ranging from the Android variety to the Windows Phone persuasion and stretching from the absolute high end of the market to the sub-$100 area. The news yet again reflects the white-hot market for mobile phones and vendors' intense desire to stand out from the crowd. (To be clear, this list is not exhaustive-in fact putting together a list of all the phones unveiled at Mobile World Congress would be just that: Exhaustive!-but it is a look at some of the higher-profile gadgets intended to make a splash or statement.)

In pictures: On the CES 2012 show floor

LAS VEGAS--The show floor of the Consumer Electronics Show here is a dangerous place. It's absolutely packed with people, mostly men and many of them hygienically lacking. None of them walk fast enough.

The show floor is also massive, like 100 football fields massive. It's outrageous. Feet cry simply contemplating the size of this year's CES show floor.

But most importantly, the CES show floor is full of electronics products of all shapes and sizes, and companies doing everything they can to bring some attention to those products. The result is a bombastic cacophony of smells, sights, sounds and foot pain that no other trade show can match.

The phones (mostly LTE) of CES 2012

LAS VEGAS--The Consumer Electronics Show here has been awash in new smartphones and tablets for the wireless market. There have been seemingly dozens of new smartphones and other gadgets announced by carriers and manufacturers, both domestic and international.

Most of these devices sport LTE network connections--a reflection of the expansive network upgrades undertaken by U.S. carriers throughout 2011--but not all of them. Nor are they all bound for U.S. carriers. Nonetheless, the sheer volume of phones unveiled at this show is noteworthy (if not overwhelming).

Thus, here's a look at some of the more notable smarpthones to plow their way through the hustle and shuffle of this year's CES hoopla. (Details, such as pricing and release date, are provided only in the cases where such information has been provided.) These are the ones worth noting, and the ones that could help set the tone for the rest of 2012.

LONDON--Nokia (NYSE:NOK) used its annual Nokia World conference here to unveil the company's first smartphones running Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone platform.
