In pictures: On the CES 2012 show floor

LAS VEGAS--The show floor of the Consumer Electronics Show here is a dangerous place. It's absolutely packed with people, mostly men and many of them hygienically lacking. None of them walk fast enough.

The show floor is also massive, like 100 football fields massive. It's outrageous. Feet cry simply contemplating the size of this year's CES show floor.

But most importantly, the CES show floor is full of electronics products of all shapes and sizes, and companies doing everything they can to bring some attention to those products. The result is a bombastic cacophony of smells, sights, sounds and foot pain that no other trade show can match.

So what does it look like? Take our photo tour to find out:

The phones (mostly LTE) of CES 2012

LAS VEGAS--The Consumer Electronics Show here has been awash in new smartphones and tablets for the wireless market. There have been seemingly dozens of new smartphones and other gadgets announced by carriers and manufacturers, both domestic and international.

Most of these devices sport LTE network connections--a reflection of the expansive network upgrades undertaken by U.S. carriers throughout 2011--but not all of them. Nor are they all bound for U.S. carriers. Nonetheless, the sheer volume of phones unveiled at this show is noteworthy (if not overwhelming).

Thus, here's a look at some of the more notable smarpthones to plow their way through the hustle and shuffle of this year's CES hoopla. (Details, such as pricing and release date, are provided only in the cases where such information has been provided.) These are the ones worth noting, and the ones that could help set the tone for the rest of 2012.

LONDON--Nokia (NYSE:NOK) used its annual Nokia World conference here to unveil the company's first smartphones running Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone platform. The two-day event was front-loaded with the Windows Phone announcement, but there was plenty to see beyond the opening keynote. Click here to see the show in pictures

The CTIA Enterprise and Applications 2011 show floor, in pictures

SAN DIEGO--The CTIA Enterprise and Applications 2011 show here was definitely subdued compared with year's past. Many companies, both large and small, decided to skip a booth this year and instead opted for simple attendance.

Nonetheless, from handsets to network equipment to smartphone accessories--and everything in between--the CTIA show floor was a worthwhile place to visit, if only for a little while. So come with us on a stroll through the booths of CTIA E&A 2011 to see what was interesting, noteworthy and just plain weird. Slideshow

The phones and tablets of CTIA Enterprise & Applications 2011

SAN DIEGO--The annual CTIA Entertainment & Applications trade show here was abuzz with new device launches. Though some of the show's thunder was robbed when Samsung and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) decided to postpone the launch of what was expected to be the first Android smartphone running the Ice Cream Sandwich version of the mobile platform, there are still devices being launched and oogled by show attendees. Here are some of the major launches so far from Huawei, Motorola Mobility (NYSE:MMI), Samsung, ZTE and others. Slideshow

Worst phones of all time

With phones, it's usually the hits that get the most press: The iPhone, HTC's Evo 4G, Motorola Mobility's (NYSE:MMI) Droid, Samsung's Galaxy S line and so on. These devices shine often because of their industrial design, sleek software, feature set and, most importantly, the overall user experience.

However, for every hero device there are likely half a dozen clunkers out there that failed to gain traction with consumers. The wasted carcasses of those phones are the ones that today's top sellers have climbed over to reach the pinnacle.

But these flops do have something to offer today's industry: They serve as reminders of what can go wrong, how far the handset industry has come and what not to do. Thus, FierceWireless compiled this admittedly highly subjective list of handsets that failed. Did we err or did we miss any failures? Let us know in the comments.
