Slideshow: The smartphones and tablets of MWC 2013
BARCELONA, Spain--The Mobile World Congress trade show here is always a hotbed of smartphone activity. Vendors typically trot out all their latest high- and low-end wares to show off to show attendees--and this year is no different.
Nokia (NYSE:NOK), Lenovo, Samsung and a wide range of other players used MWC this year to unveil new devices. However, this year's device news was notable in its lack of high-end, flagship device announcements.
In years past the world's handset vendors would save their big handset news for release during MWC or other, similar major industry trade shows. Now, however, flagship device announcements are saved for vendor-specific events. For example, BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) announced its new BlackBerry Z10 and Q10 during a company event before MWC, and Samsung announced it would unveil its Galaxy S IV during an event March 14, after MWC.
Nevertheless, some vendors did seek to make waves during this year's MWC with low-end phones, high-end smartphones and, to a surprising degree, new Android tablets.
